I acquired an old aluminium runabout last season that is in very good condition.I believe it is a '56. It's rated for a 25 hp and I have a '76 25 hp rude but it's a tiller style. I also have an '89 30 hp rude with remote. I would imagine a 25 hp in 1956 would be heavier than the 30 hp. Will I have a problem using the '89 30 hp?

Re: Higher hp rating

The 76 Evinrude 25 actually probably weighs slightly less than the much later 30 hp, but that's not really an issue. It would be easy enough to change the older engine for remote operation.

There's a significant power difference between the two engines, though. The '76's power was measured at the flywheel. The 89's power was measured at the propellor. So the difference is going to be more than 5 hp...more like 7-8 hp.

Would I use that 30 on that boat? Probably so. I don't think it would be a safety issue. That's not my usual answer on questions like yours, but I don't think it would be a problem.
