For the moment ... boat being badly lighted garage all I can read on the tire wall is 1.80 X 12 load range B Highspeed. The trailer is a "Yatch Club" brand (bought new)

Boy, that's a narrow tire!! LOL. It probably said 4.80 x 12 but you said you had bad light.

Have you even concidered how much faster your 12" tires are turning compared to your tow vehicle?

California limits you to 55 while towing. I've gotten my rig up to 65, but my poor 25-year-old Bronco isn't too happy when I do that, so I usually just mosey along at 50 or so.
