HiN in only eight #s

I had to scrape the paint off the back of my newly purchased aluminum boat to find the HIN, and when I did I found that there are only eight numbers? I was told that the boat was an 1982 by the seller, but if that were the case wouldnt there be twelve numbers? These are the numbers K0040007.

use this to find the manufacturer---- http://boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm

then use the coast gaurd link at the bottom of the page and use the mic numbers to find the mic numbers, that should help you out some.... i hope.

i tried my links and they only worked part of the way for some reason so i tried a different route and came up with this
