I have one hint for buying a Johnnyrude Triple 70 (Envirude 70hp (74-97)/Johnson 75hp (75-88)). Used the attached model number chart (found before on iboats).

What other hints or charts do you use when identifying or buying a triplelooper?

Story: I have only iboat forum recommendations and no visual knowledge of each model year for this 70 hp outboard. So when I saw a 84' Evinrude 70 on Craiglist the other day I called the owner so I could buy it. Great guy and he had said it was his dads. When I checked out the engine in person I had brought my chart. I found it was a 1976. It surprised the bought of us. I didn't buy it because I wasn't looking for the hydro-mechanical shifter.

BUYING A USE MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

thats actually a pretty good chart.

Thank you, I love charts. I have been collecting everything I can from iboats forums about the Johnnyrude 70 and will add on this "hint" chart for the next new guy.

Buying a used engine from a private person is harder than from a dealer. A good chart comes in handy.
