Re: Hispanic groups call for moratorium on work raids

Outgoing Governor Mitt Romney (R) of Mass issued an order to the state police to start arresting illegals and holding them for the feds.

Incoming governor Duval Patrick (D) has promised to recind that order upon taking office.

What a freakin surprise.......................

okay guys, I have it on good authority (my high school freshman pre-AP World Geography student) that the word Hispanic is being misused here; in fact Hispanics are from the island of Hispanola, which is currently divided between the independent nations of Haiti and Dominican Republic.

We'll have to find another term. Latin Americans comes to mind.

fine, but note that not all Latin Americans are illegal aliens. The countries of Latin America are chock full of legal Latin Americans. In fact, the United States has a sizeable population of citizens of Latin American heritage. You could say that only a tiny percentage of Latin Americans live in the United States, and only a fraction of them are illegal aliens.

Well if you consider 12 million to 20 million of them to be a fraction, okee dokee. The ones that are here legally I will call visitors or Americans.

Those folks who live in Mexico I call Mexicans and so on.

20 million (a fabricated count anyway) is less than the total Latin American population of the USA, which makes it a fraction. But what the heck, why not, let's go ahead and refer to all American citizens of Latin American extraction as illegal. Any other citizens you want to marginalize? How about fat people? Bald people? Just say the word.

Did this somehow confuse you Jtex?

"The ones that are here legally I will call visitors or Americans. "

I guess we have reached the point where calling people fellow Americans is somehow marginalizing them. What a country.

Interesting interpretation of the term fraction, I guess only a fraction of the worlds population doesn't live in my house. :}

What confused me was, when I (jokingly) suggested we find a substitute for the term "Hispanic" you recommended "illegal aliens". The point we've reached is that referring to American citizens as "illegal aliens" is marginalizing them.

2000 U.S. Census says 35 million American citizens are of Latin extraction. Even if there are 35 million latino illegal aliens, they would be 50% of the latino population. As a fraction, that would be expressed as "one-half," which could be written as "1/2". Glad you found that interesting. You must have a really big house.

You forgot the Hyphen. latin-americans. We have to be PC, right? God forbid they be called Americans.

Have your son ask his teacher why they can't be just good ol' plain illegal-Americans.

Thanks for clearing that up for all of us. I think the point is obvious. I bet a fraction of us will understand your use of the term fraction to mean anything but 100%. Most of us tend to believe that used the way you did, it means very very little or tiny or statistically irrelavent. But cool, I look forward to using this versitile and nearly useless term frequently.

Come on Jtex, get over yourself. The topic is on ILLEGAL UNDOCUMENTED workers. But I am sure that that is just a fraction of the American work force.. 8)

daughter. It wasn't a classroom discussion about what to call people, she came up with the "Hispanics are from Hispanola" thing on her own - that's the difference between "learning" and "memorizing". Sort of a joke. A play on words sort of thing. And "Latin America" refers to the Spanish-speaking populations of Mexico, Central America, South America, Carribean and Bahamas.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - U.S. Hispanic groups and activists on Thursday called for a moratorium on workplace raids to round up illegal immigrants, saying they were reminiscent of Nazi crackdowns on Jews in the 1930s.

They accused the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement of "racial profiling," or selective enforcement against Hispanics, for arresting 1,300 workers on immigration violations in December 12 raids at meatpacking plants in six states.

"We are demanding an end to these immigration raids, where they are targeting brown faces. That is major, major racial profiling, and that cannot be tolerated," said Rosa Rosales, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, at a news conference.

"This unfortunately reminds me of when Hitler began rounding up the Jews for no reason and locking them up," Democratic Party activist Carla Vela said. "Now they're coming for the Latinos, who will they come for next?"[/b]

I think Carla is missing something here, after all, these are Illegal Aliens, not legal Immigrants as she wishes us to believe.

Naaa... the liberals don't have as much control as they would like to think, it's still a Republican President with a veto pen.

well I don't have to like it!!!

okay really I couldn't care less.

But I am very unhappy with the aboriginal North Americans for co-opting the term "Native American". If I was born in Canada I'd be a Native Canadian. But I was born in America so I am a Native American. If they want terminology to distinguish themselves I have no problem with it...let 'em be called Aborginal North Americans or something!

I have taken to listing myself as a native american on any application I fill out. To those people that were born somewhere South of the USofA and are here ILLEGALLY I prefer to call 'em wetbacks. Those that are here LEGALLY are Americans, no hyphen needed. Those that disagree can if they want, a spade is a spade.

Ken, don't sell the arguement short. Those from the far east, near east, south, those with expired visa's, those who had to sneak in like theives, all of them are illegal aliens. If you are not here legally, you have to be here illegally. What is the point of granting visas if the dates on them have no meaning. And if you claim to be politically oppressed, hey I have been told that we are just an RCH away from Nazi Germany, why would anyone want to stay?

The reality of things is we are afflicted with PC. Doing what is right is secondary to feelings, and getting elected, and image. One of the few things the government was charged with was to maintain our boarders. We have failed.
