I think he already posted a pic of the new prop, just not the old one to identify any differences. To me it looks almost like the pitch isn't the same, being far less on the new prop.

The three pics are all about the same angle high above the rear of the engine. I would like a side shot to see from that angle

A pic of the remains of the old prop next to the new one might provide more clues.

As you most probably know , Changing to the new style prop requires changes on the mounting washers and such. If it's not exactly changed right - The prop may be spinning on the shaft. Please recheck the installation instructions and double check ... 2 - Find an old prop with the old style pressed in hub and re install with correct old style mounting washers and such and take a spin. Just to be sure it's not the new prop / installation.

Definitely sounding like the prop spinning on the shaft. Pull it and check for shaft spline damage.

Maybe you got the wrong hub adapter and its not engaging the splines properly.

*********************

You can (engine OFF, maybe even pull the spark plug wires for safety) put the engine in gear and then grab the prop and see if you can turn the prop without turning the engine. Wiggle the prop while you do this and see if you can feel it jumping splines.

If it was spinning on the shaft it would have worn down completely in a couple minutes and wouldn't provide any thrust.

I can turn the engine by putting it in gear and spinning it counterclockwise with great force. So I gave up and I took it to the shop this morning. We put it in the tank and the owner of the shop said he's been doing this for over 30 years and he is totally baffled because it is not slipping there's no noise in the engine nothing to indicate an issue. The only thing he can think of is this motor does have a 5 inch extension and maybe something has failed in there. He said this is the correct prop. So for a hundred bucks he will diagnose the problem I'll keep you guys updated.

Boat fixed! The issue was the prop itself. the wrong prop was put in the wrong box and mislabeled. To diagnose the problem we found an old prop, put it on the boat and it worked fine. The prop that was in the Box did not have enough grab and was for a pontoon boat.

Learned a huge lesson!

Thank you to Mercury for standing by your warranty and recognizing the packaging issue and to Nichols Marine in Tulsa for your excellent customer service!

I have found when working on a engine problem , most of the time its goes back to the original problem. Many years ago I was working on a old outboard simple 2 cycle with points, engine would only run one one cylinder ok pull flywheel and set points pul all back together it would run for awhile then go back to one cylinder, check every thing carbs wires etc then a friend was looking at the motor with me when i had flywheel off checking coils he said hey are the points supposed to open and close I said yes I adjusted them already, the points set was missing the lock washer and letting them close again after running awhile, put new lock washer in it and it ran like a champ, I was pulling my hair out could not understand why it would run perfect for a little while then go back to one cylinder. Lesson learned check double check the original work or problem first!

This is what I suspected early on.

Yes sir you were exactly right! The prop in the box we bought wasn't the one we thought we had purchased.

Again thanks everyone for your input. Looking forward to the weekend on the lake and actually being able to burn through a tank of gas!
