Hey all, i came in on too much of an angle when backing in (Im still trying to get this right), and i hit my prop while in reverse on the wood pole..

Lucky it wasnt my neightbors boat, but now the prop has sustained a little damage. Each fin is bent back a little bit. I want to replace it, but my friend is coming over tomorrow from upstate NY and he wants to go fishing.

You think this prop will make it for one more trip? Or should i rush around to get it replaced today?

replace

Otherwise it could end up being a very expensive fishing trip. An out-of-balance prop can cause damage to your drive.

We almost lost you over the edge once... let's not push it OK?? :p :D

OK, i'll replace it today.

Do you think i should go with a SS prop instead of aluminum considering this probably wont be the last time i hit something with the prop?

Doesn't SS cost more than aluminum?

The good thing about aluminum props is that they give way before your gears/shafts do. I would stick with aluminum until you get that docking thing down...... :D ...JK

a prop shop will be able to fix your bent aluminum one to be as good as new.... maybe not by tomorrow, but get it fixed and keep it as a spare. Don't let the dealer/boat place selling you a new prop tell you your old one is junk... if you leave it with them (as garbage), I'd bet $$ that they'll get it fixed themselves and then sell it as a 'reconditioned' one. The probably don't do their own prop work, so when they tell you they can't fix it and you need a new one, they're not really lying... well not exactly anyway.

Well I just replaced it with an aluminum one.

I have a question though, when i tightened the nut all the way until i couldnt tighten it anymore the prop wouldnt spin at all.

I loosened it up just a tad and is spun freely.. is this ok? It doesnt have a cotter pin, so i worry.

NO NO NO NO and NO

your are mising the thrust washer from the front of the prop or something like that

it may be stuck on the front of the old prop

the nut should be VERY tight and then there should be a tab washer to bend over just in case

but dont feel bad i made many a mistake over the years and am smileing to myself remenbering them ;)

tommays

Tommays -

When i put the new prop on in the back of the prop was a large washer - the size of the hub - then the plastic thing that goes into the hub, then the prop, then a metal thing that slides into the prop - than the tab washer, and then the nut... is that all?

I dont see any other washer on the old prop.

there should be a large washer something like this that goes on first and keeps the prop from rubbing on the gearcase

if you have any binding when you tighten the nut something is on worng and will cause dammage

it sounds like you have a XHS type hub there are A and B type props as well as many types of hardware that dont mix and match

tommays

If that prop rubs against the drive, something is missing, or you have the wrong prop. If you try to run it, you will take out your drive. So please determine what the problem is before that happens.
You could have the wrong thrust washer. Make sure the prop and thrust washer are for your model drive.

Responding to your post brought me bad prop luck!

Heavy west winds blew out all the water from the marina and I knicked something manuvering at the ramp. Weird though... it knicked the rear of the prop!
