Hit speed bump with tilt and trim

Hey guys,

Well the engine tune up on the evinrude 75 hp is going smoothly (got the carb. rebuilds left then it should be ready to run great). I am looking at the tilt and trim and hooked up the tilt trim cords to a good deep cycle battery and when I push the tilt trim button on the remote throttle control all I hear is a click. I removed the fuse box cap and it sounds like the click is coming from the tilt trim solenoid. Is this right or is it a relay next to the solenoid. I am wondering if I need to replace some eletrical parts, check them, or move some parts around in the box. What do you guys think I should do? Thanks for the help?

Depends on what year that 75hp is.

The motor is a 1980 75 hp Evinrude outboard

The 1980 75hp Model has direct wiring (green) for the down mode..... BUT incorporates a heavy duty special power tilt/trim (PTT) solenoid for the up mode (there is no relay next to the solenoid).

If you have no movement in either direction (you didn't say), suspect the electric motor. Test the motor by disconnecting it at its nylon connector ot terminal (which ever it has), then run jumper cables directly from a known fully charged good battery to the electrical motors wires....... battery negative to the BLACK wire, battery positive to the BLUE (up) or GREEN (down) wire. If the electric motor now functions, then obviously the electric motor is okay.

Let is know what you find.

Well I went ahead and ordered a new solenoid for the tilt trim, due to the click sound that comes from that solenoid when the trim button is pushed down. So that will hopefully fix the problem, but if not I will test the motor.

I installed the new tilt/trim silenoid and nothing changed. I then checked for hydraulic fluid and the reservoir was empty of fluid. Finally I disconnected the wires from the silenoid box and connected the black and blue wires to my starting battery and nothing happened except sparks were made when the wires touched the battery terminals. Would an empty fluid reservoir keep the tilt/trim from operating?

Is this problem fixed yet. I had basically the same problem. As stated above test the motor. Sounds like you'll be needing a new motor for the t/t unit. I got one on eBay for around $80. I discovered. you do not have to remove the motor from the boat. Just remove the 3 bolts on each side. Then the pin on the hyd. ram. Then the entire unit will slide out. Nice to do everything to it this way. check, replace any bad o-rings. fill with fluid, and clean ur up. I had to replace the wood mount that the motor bolts to. So I had to remove my motor to do this.


But If you are just working on the T/T, it can be removed from the motor with 6 bolts, and one pin.

Got the problem fixed. What had happened was the cover to the three wires going to the silenoid box from the motor had worn away and come apart in many areas. Also as I had mentioned in other threads the guy I got this boat from had it sitting there for five years and did nothing to properly store it. Therefore when it rained the water ran down those wires and into the power tilt trim motor which caused corrosion and thus a non working tilt trim. Got a new one put on and had the tilt trim fluid topped off and everything works great now! I love this website but nothing beats a mechanic actually looking at the problem himself and seeing whats going on. However all the input did help me talk to the mechanic and get it all narrowed down, so again thanks everyone for your help!!

@dtd1964..... I had to do the same thing. The transom was very very old and basically crumpling when i touched it. So I bought a new sheet of marine grade fur plywood and began the replacement process. However when I scraped out the old wood i noticed that the four braces holding the transom on was riveted to the bottom of the boat, and as an amatuer boater i was not about to pop and reinsert rivets! So I got the transom replaced and I used all new screws, washers, and nuts along with a fresh paint jub. She looks great but that is the first and last transom I will ever replace in my life!!!!
