As any father know's his boy like's to take off with watever tool dad is working with. I got a Seven year old who finally came to understand that dad don't like to have to search the place for his tool's(he had a special fascination with hitch pin's)...Late last fall he finally began to understand this. Course my tools still have appeal to him, but at least now they don't disapear while I'm working with them. and he now has an understanding of witch hitch pin's he can use!

So here I am this spring using the lawn sweep to get the leaves I didn't get to last fall. I stopped for a couple minutes to have a cup of coffee and when I started the lawn tractor and took off.....Bang, there lies my lawn sweep, My hitch pin disappeared while I was drinking coffee!....Seem's My 2 year old has picked up where his brother left off! Little bugger swipes it every time I stop.

MICHAEL...WHERE IS MY HITCH PIN!! He will take off and go get it from wherever he happened to stash it....till next time I happen to stop.

Arggghh...I'll bet I killed 45 minutes today waiting for my hitch pin to "reappear"

Just think, If all goes well I'll only have to fight this battle for five more years!

Is it possible your child is a genius? He knew you needed that 45 minute break and did not know how to tell you! It could be genetic!

I thought most hitch pins had a hole in the end for a hitch pin clip. Sometimes those clips can be a challenge to get off.

One out of my three is a tool thief, Aaron is the one that will be fun with cars and boats and stuff. He's 12 now, and I'm kinda gettin' sick of it. He leaves tools on the lawn, in the street, on the hill. I bought him his own set, but he likes EVERY tool: rakes, shovels, rubber mallets, lawn mowers, bungees, hand trucks. I have to say, he hasn't got into hitch pins yet . . .

When he was two or three my company held a little fair for our annual picnic. He was waiting in line for his turn on a miniature Ferris Wheel, as soon as the guy opened the line gate, Aaron ran straight for the hand brake release clutch mechanism thing. My boss and the operator and I all lunged for him and one of us got to him just before he released it. I've never been so proud . . . tearing up just thinking about it :D

Tools and mechanical things is a way of life in my family. I taught my kids at a young age to put my tools back where they got them. they were welcome to use them, but to return them when through. This lesson was taught through verbal comands and in extreme cases through Corpral Punishment

I had to laugh at my oldest son, his two year old son is facinated with hand tools, has a good collection of junk tools of his own to play with. The other day my son was working on his 65 chevy PU, he was underneath the truck when his tools kept dissapearing , he crawled out to find them, the two year old was putting them back in the tool box as fast as he was getting them out :D he said he finally had to give up working on it till the little ones nap time.He said it took 30 minutes to get all the tools back in the propper drawers. :D :D

I think every father that has tools goes through this. I call that phase one. Just wait until phase 2 and 3 of grandkids come around. I think with all mine, my troubles of hanging onto my tools is going to get harder.

Right now my grandkids love to play on the garden tractors. The one I use for mowing only had 20 hours on it. For the time I have had it, right now it should show about 300 by my calculation. The hour meter shows over 1500 on it because of the key being left in the on position running the battery dead. Due to this, they have killed 3 batteries. I can take the keys out, but they seem to find an old junk tractor with a key and use that one. I keep thinking they will grow out of this and know they will. But there seems to always be a younger one to replace them. Just part of life and gotta love it,,,,,,,I guess?
