OK this is my first time putting anything out there.I have been a reader for a while but now i have a new project. I bought a 18ft Jestercraft last year with a 120 looper. Boat is a 85? engine is a 93. Boat was solid no soft spots. When pulling it this summer to powerwash bottom i caused a tear or slit in the bottom towards the stern about half way between the keel and the side.I didnt notice it until i just pulled it for the winter 2 weeks ago. Also i was getting some water in the bilge it seemed only when under power it looks like this tear in the glass was scooping the water into the boat. Not alot but enough to cause pump to kick on. It seems to be a section of 12x12 inches that has delaminated from wood hull.THis boat was built on Chincoteage island and is also called a Chincoteage scow.Any ideas how to make repair would be great.

Without pictures we would be guessing, it's almost a must to have pictures of the boat and damage, and we love to look at cool boats regardless.

Re: Hole in the hull

standard hull breach....

the reapir is an inide out side type.

this means you repair it from both the inside and out side of the hull...

grind away the top surface of the gellcoat on the out side so you are at bare glass.......do the same to the top layer of resin on the inside...

vaccume....clean with acetone....glass a 1.5 csm then a 1708.....then another csm slightly larger followed by the same sized 1708......do that three times on the inside.

the outside is one csm....one 1708....one csm....and done

Re: Hole in the hull

yes.....but i would not unless you are a pro......i can guide you thru it....but for a first timer its a real chore.

the problem is that more than likely you have water in the hull.....it is trapped in waterlogged foam.
that is why you did not notice the hull right away..... the foam under the deck, acted like someone with there hand over the hull hole....but i will gaurentee you that some water got in the foam.......that wet foam has to come out, or you will cause more damage to the boat in the way of rotten stringers.

i would advise you to take a circular saw and cut thru the deck.....dig out the wet foam.....then you can glass inside out. the hole in the deck only needs to be 1 foot sq.

if this is not an option......the repair will be very difficult for a first timer, and take tools you might not have

Re: Hole in the hull

It started as an impact hit actualy what happened is the boat road up on the guide roller when i was winching it up. I wasnt watching what i was doing. After 2 months water got in under the gel coat i can push on about a 12x12 inch area around the tear in the picture and its hollow.
