Hole In Water Pump Plate

The service manual for my 1989 125 HP Force shows two different water pump plates that might be used in my engine. One has a small hole in it that appears to bleed some of the water from the high pressure side back to the low pressure side presumably to reduce the water pressure in the engine. The other plate does not have this hole, but the manual says to be sure and use the correct plate. My current plate has the small hole. I'm wondering if anyone knows the exact function of this hole and what happens if I use a plate without the hole. I'm thinking this might up the water pressure a little and cool the engine a little better. I've consistently had intermittent cooling problems even with new T-stats, impellers, etc. and this might help if I have a blockage somewhere.

Am I going to damage anything by trying the other plate?
