Holes for the Trim Tabs

Quick question, When I installed my Trim Tabs I injected the holes in the hull with 3m 5200 adhesive and smeared it on the hull around the holes but not enough to cover the whole hing area. Close but not quite. They appear very secure. Does anyone think I'll have problems with water getting in the hull? The instructions state the screws will seal the holes but the 5200 is recommended. Guess I'm paranoid now that it's in the water. If I decide to take them off next year and apply more adhesive will that make the screw holes less effective(strong) since the screws will be coming out and going back in. I think I'll be ok for this season but I worry. Thanks Guys!!

Re: Holes for the Trim Tabs

It is not clear to me if you put any goop on the actual screws (8 - 12 screws if I remember correctly) that mount the tabs at the "hinge area". Your post says you injected the holes, screw holes too, or just the holes that go all the way through the hull? If you put goop on the screw tips it would probably be enough. If you put goop in the tab mounting plate screw holes (into your hull) then you should be more than OK.

Well I put it in the screw holes and it was seaping out.....not on the screws them selves if I remember correctly....it's been like 2 months. But after the screws were all the way in the excess adhesive was all around the heads of the screws. I guess if water gets in the hull the foam would fill up and the boat would sit lower but obviously I don't want to see that. It's a 22' Grady White. Thanks Quietcat!!

If you saw goop come out by the screw heads then you should have nothing to worry about. Forget it, and have fun playing with those tabs. I absolutely love mine!!! :)

It will be fine. Any water that seeps by will get taken care of by the bilge pump.
