I'm currently restoring an old Evinrude Sportwin, 1961, 10 hp.
Before it came to my possession, someone drilled holes in the cover as seen in the picture below..

Since I'm going to repaint it, I was planning on covering these holes. But before I do so, I would like to know why they where made in the first place.
I'd really appreciate if anyone could tell me =)
