Re: holes prop

Their called vents. The prop would be referred to as a vented prop. The holes allow a little exhaust gas to get behind the prop blades so the engine revs a little bit quicker getting you on plane faster. They do not affect high speed performance.

Re: holes prop

I've been thinking about those holes around the prop housing too. I read something over on marinemechanic.com about drilling them yourself to improve holeshot. Charging batteries for cordless drill right now! lol If we are lucky, someone with experience in this area will reply with detail.

Re: holes prop

Size of hole will be determined by the hull-type, weight, and available HP...I would highly recommend you start with 1/8" holes and test...1/32" can make a big difference, so enlarge slowly.

Re: holes prop

Hey guys,

Got a problem with this diagram. The hole is behind the blade. Needs to be in front of the blade. Idea is to blow exhaust gas across face of blade to deliberately cause cavitation; hence get engine to max rpm, hence hp at max, then as boat accelerates, water from forward motion forces exhaust out the rear of hub and hole becomes useless....which is what you want.....like shifting gears....sounds like it (and feels like it) too when it does it.

Dunno about 1/4 inch, but my Merc prop had like 3/8 holes in it. Worked great getting a lard *** (boat) on plane rapidly....or getting a skiier up fast (behind a lard *** boat).

My 2c,

Mark

Re: holes prop

The diagram is correct.

Holes placed on the other side of the blades are for a whole different purpose.

As for the vent holes -- as the prop turns clockwise, exhaust escapes out and is caught by the next blade.

Re: holes prop

Well D, it has been awhile since I looked at it (sold it about 10 years ago). Maybe they were in the same place as the diagram and I just forgot. Grin.

Now I know what it is; that's an OMC prop and mine was a Merc.....Ha! (Little brand loyalty here. Grin)

Mark

Re: holes prop

I run a Merc Tempest and all Merc props vented by hole or PVS system, are vented behind the blade.

Re: holes prop

Yeah, I was just over looking at Merc props and I agree. I think my old vented prop was a Rapture and they are where you say they are...according to the picture.

Oh well. Your mind is the first thing to go...I think.

Mark
