Hi all,

I have a 2006 vovlo glp-d with a 2 barrel holley carb.
I have a crack in one of the float chambers which i need to replace.
Can anyone let me know if the centre slung chambers are all the same. also would i need to reset my float or is it a case of just changing the parts over?
I also need to remove the anti-tamper covers on the idle mixture screws as the engines will reuse to idle within specs without shaking and sounding rough.
The carbs are the Californian Emission spec and I cannot seem to remove them without excessive force, are they to be drilled?

Thanks in advance

Thanks Don, your help is always appreciated!
I have read elsewhere on here that if the idle speed is to be adjusted, then the idle mixture needs to be altered to suit?
When I drop the idle dcrew to the specified 750 rpm, the engine shakes and coughs violently so im hoping I can even this out by adjusting the idle mixture?

Cheers
Danny

It will probably help the idle. The 3.0L engines are always adjusted to lean from the factory. Causes rough idle, dieseling, hard starting, etc.

What is the S/N of your engine? There is a recall from Volvo on some of the holley carbs in a certain S/N range. If you remove the flame arrestor you will see a group of numers stamped into the air horn on the carb. The bottom number is the date code EX. 2346. What is this number?

All they are is caps pressed into hole over mixture screws.Ive always drilled them out with 3/16 bit.Once you start drilling most likely they will turn and come out...I would set to 1 to 1 and half turns then go from there..

I would also check your power valve as a ruptured one will cause idle like you state. They are often ruptured and just about every time the engine backfires.

I 2nd this but instead of checking I would replace....Backfire will blow one out the first time...

Holley power valves haven't been susceptible to blow out for years.

Holley has awesome customer service and technical help. If you call them with the numbers stamped on the choke tower, they will tell you which replacement bowl will work. I have 3 spare marine 2300 series carbs laying around, and could probably send you one if I had a picture of yours.

If you set your idle mixture screw to 1.5 turns out for starters, you will be super close at sea level.

Guys, he has a crack in the fuel bowl, and no one said anything about backfires. Besides, as mentioned, the power valve has been changed to prevent blowout from backfires.
here is from Holley tech info. http://www.holley.com/TechService/Library.asp

Hi Chaps,

Thanks for the replies and sorry for the delay in replying!
The engines have had a constant problem from new (see my earlier posts).
They will die when first engaging either forward or reverse, even after letting the engines warm up to running temp.
I havent messed with the carbs yet as didnt want to alter anything and thought being brand new they would be set up properly?
Over here in the UK, there isnt much information on these engines and their assisiated problems as most marine engines are diesel.
Gradually I have been learning that the weakness does seem to be the carb and is set too lean (thanks DonS) to acheive the Californian Emmision Regs.
I must admit that the crack in the fuel bowl is probably down to me as I removed the fuel inlet filter and probably over-tightened it.
I have also learned that the rpm needs to be max 750rpm in forward gear and whilst trying to set this up (mine were 1000rpm in neutral) found that the lower i set the idle screw on the linkage, the engines would shake and splutter and made the forward engagement issue even worse!
I need to richen the fuel mixture, hence the enquiry of how to remove the tamper covers as they seem to be well stuck in and i didnt want to damage the carbs further by forcing them out.
I will try to drill them out as earlier suggested.
I have heard about the power valve issue but this problem affects both the engines so im leaning towards the mixture not being set up right?
Could anyone inform me as to the part number of the fuel bowl i need, im sorry but i cant provide any numbers off the carb as we are under a load of snow at the moment and its impossible for me to get to the boat.
I have tried ebay but most seem to have the inlet on the opposite side i need.
All i can tell you is that it is a centre slung float type!

Kind Regards All

Danny

I have an earlier Holly 2 barrel on a 3.0 OMC and as I remember, the idle jets are not set the same, per OMC manual. I can't remember how it goes and my manual is not here(at the lake). This seemed wierd to me but it works and idle is perfect and smooth for a 4banger.
Just get the facts, yours may be different.
