I am aware of at least two different weights for holman moody 302's 20lb and 30lbs. Anybody know why they did this or which one performs better.<br />thanks<br />Barry

Ok my bad! 1972 19ft allmand/supernova Twin hollman moody ford 302's with 351 heads.Supposedly they were 275hp a piece.<br />The reason i'm asking I had to junk the original blocks,salt. I tossed the baby with bath water meaning flywheels and flex plates. Did'nt know. I did keep the sheetmetal and h/m alum. bellhousings.Since then i have 2 "simular"re-built longblocks in shrinkwrap.Both flywheels 20lbs and 30lbs have the same bolt up,crank.Which will perform better is what i really am getting at.<br />Thanks Barry

I'd expect 20 pounder to rev quicker,30 pounder better on a work boat.Tow maybe,or some how lug along.<br /><br />DHP

Ok But something tells me hollman moody was strickly performance and speed why the heavier weight?

One problem you could encounter with the lighter flywheel is the engine will want to stall when putting the drive in gear. The inertia of the spinning flywheel helps maintain engine speed when a sudden load such as engaging the clutch is put on the engine. An engine produces very little horsepower at idle and the spinning flywheel is a source of stored energy.

Go here and talk to this guy www.meridian-prime.com/nova He has a nova 24 with twin Holman moody v drive conversions. Seems very knowledgeable and can probably put you in touch with Allan Brown, the designer of your boat. Has a Holman Moody link too. You may want to add your progress to the message boards on his site as its devoted to Nova Marine, the original designer of your boat before the molds went to Allmand.

Hey Merc it is the same as mine but with twin 302 ford and Volvo 270 drives. One thought is they should both match or the motors will act differently when putting around. Sorry B just thought of it.

Thanks by the way for your help<br />Hey Barry I just found this “ 302 engines dated 1981 and earlier will need a 157 tooth 28oz imbalance flywheel, as do the 289 and 351 blocks, regardless of year. 302/5.0L engines will need a 157 tooth 50oz imbalance flywheel or otherwise know as a 5.0L flywheel. We offer flywheels with fixed and removable counter weights depending on the need.
