My very first boat was home built. That was in 1968. Even though I went to college AND worked full time, I simply HAD to have a boat.
At the time a wooden runabout was in the $2000 range, a tinny utility about $1200 and a nice fiberglass runabout was about $3000.
I bought the wood as a package for $165. Screws, glue, paint, etc. was another $50. Holsclaw sold their all-roller trailers as a "kit" for another $150. So, for $365 I had a 16' runabout.
I powered her with a 10 HP Merc the first year. The second year brought a 40 HP Evinrude Lark for $550. The 3rd year I added a windshield and convertible top.
I was lucky in that my Grandpa had an empty garage and he was retired. My retired Uncle lived next door.
The most memorable and valuable time in my life. My first date with a girlie that would later become my wife was 55 years ago in that very boat.
