Home made rock tamer / rock guard?

Wondering if anyone has had any success with a home made rock guard? I was thinking a piece of L shaped aluminum attached to the hitch with a u-bolt and attaching some mud flaps.

Thoughts? I don't really want to spend big bucks on a commercial one as I'm rarely on gravel roads.

back when I liked and drove a lot of gravel roads I made a piece to hung under the back of my truck to stop that.
