I got a couple brand new, still in the box rod holders at a garage sale for $1 each. Probably cheaper than buying the PVC. It's almost garage sale season!

I actually made a set out of PVC conduit. I used a mill to machine the slots in the top of each tube. Used a water-jet to cut stainless steel brackets. (Yes, I'm very lucky to have access to some nice toys at work). Riveted it all together. After it was all said and done I don't believe it was worth the effort, I still like the store-bought ones better, for the money those PVC rod holders are great.

I made rod holders out of PVC electrical conduit since the gray color matched my boat's interior. A bit different design as I had them mounted horizontal under the gunnels, I cut the ends at 45* and drilled mounting holes into the exposed area of the 45* cut. I was able to stow 11 rods and keep them out of the way, 7 port and 4 starboard.

The down side to using PVC is it will discolor with sun exposure, UV rays. After a few years the area's that were exposed to direct sun light had a tan tinge to them.

Thanks for the tips guys. I think I will at least give it a shot, as I'm sure I already have everything I need at the house. Will post up pics.

I made two sets of five holders each for my friends 30 footer. They were 1-1/2 PVC screwed to 5/4X 6 PT lumber. I used a screw gun and 1/2" copper pipe straps to attach them to his stainless railings. We removed them when we were not fishing. The copper does not mar the stainless.

BTW - You need to make sure you have enough holders. My 16 footer had four holders, so when I got the 19 footer, I installed 8 holders, since the boat was longer. My friends 30 footer therefore needed 10 holders. if he ever buys a 35 footer, I will need to install at least 20 holders. We do not want our boats to have "Rod Holder Envy" LOL

Ya know, at less than $19 that is a pretty reasonable rod holder. Have you figured out how much the materials are going to cost for you to make it yourself?

Mark, 10 foot of 1-1/2 PVC is $4-5, and will make 10 rod holders. 5/4X6 PT lumber is about $3 if you do not have scrap laying around.
