Homebuilding a skiff?

Hello, I've been kicking around the idea of building a wooden boat or a stitch and glue type for quite a while now. I'd like an open boat around 16' that I can fish a very shallow braided river with. I'd like to power it with a 3 cyl. outboard of 70 hp or less. What I really need is a good design or combination of designs. I know I could run shallow with a jon type hull but I hate the ride they have. I'm thinking of something a little more sophisticated. I've heard you can run an engine really high with a tunnel-keeled boat but I'm not too familiar with the concept or design. <br /><br />I'm not afraid of complexity, infact if I'm going to go through all the effort I'd better have a conversation piece when I'm done. Some of my ideas have been converting a small jet boat like a Sugarsand or a Seadoo to a fishing boat, or building my own and installing a jet drive from a PWC type craft. But I really like outboards and would like to build a boat myself. How about a 3 point hydroplane with a trolling motor and fishing chairs??? ;)

Have you checked out the Glen-L site www.glen-l.com? Dozens of designs there, and the best support network you'll find anywhere.

I like the flats boat designs for a lot of reasons. I like the raised deck in the front, the stand up console that I could see sand bars from, and they look like they draw very little water. I also like a walkaround deck. Maybe a tunnel could be devised in order to run the motor higher. My issue is needing to be able to move over very shallow sandbars without hanging the motor up.<br /><br />Thanks for those links, they helped me start to form some ideas!

CalicoKid....Will have to get back to you w/some sites. Have a stitch and glue design similar to a carolina skiff, but in plywood. Its one that I want to build. And another site that shows you how to cut down a jet ski and install into an alum. or wooden boat. Runs in 2 inches of water. Are you active Navy? Got a son thats a EN3 on a carrier, and about to transfer to a cruiser.

Casey, Your boat is really very nice! I like the details, like the floor and the lights. Where did your design come from? And by the way, I hope that steel pipe in the glute picture isn't of yourself, man I didn't expect to see that!<br /><br />GeeFrankk, I like the Phantom Skiffs from Bateau, especially the one with a tunnel. I couldn't get your jet drive site to load at all, I'd like to see that for sure. I'm not in the Navy but I HAVE been to Savannah several times and love it there. Any work down there for a corporate trainer or an electrician?

Thanks for resuscitating this thread! That 20' tunnel is great! It's been a year since I started thinking about this and I've got lots of pictures, ideas and some drawings of my own. Planning is the most important step right? I will be putting together a one sheet boat of some kind this Fall most likely just for some practice and use on the no-motor lakes around here. As for the bigger skiff that I want, I need to sell a boat or two first and commit myself to a design. Definately a tunnel and a CC though. :)
