actually, I did some more research and found out that it is legal to modify it and have it that loud. Actually, where I usually go, many boats have side exhausts and are loud.
my only concern was would I damage anything if I do this modification? my research so far says no everything would be ok.
And if I ever wanted to go back to through prop, all I have to do is re-install the Y pip and patch the big holes on the sides of the hull.

Well if it's not bluffing, you're most certainly blowing smoke up the OP's....you know what because it's obvious you have an agenda and not providing accurate information.

I have certainly not checked all states, but for example... my boat is registered in Ohio and here is the law in ohio: http://ohiodnr.com/watercraft/opsguide/ohiovr2/tabid/2752/Default.aspx

This is the section about exhaust

"Exhaust Muffler Required
(ORC 1547.31)
Every powercraft shall be equipped with a muffler or muffler system that is in good working order, in constant operation and effectively installed to prevent excessive or unusual noise.

No person shall operate or give permission to operate a powercraft in a manner to exceed the following noise levels:

90 decibels on the "A" scale in a stationary sound level test prescribed by SAE J2005. (Measured from one meter with engine at low idle speed when at dock or tied to another boat.)
75 decibels on the "A" scale measured as specified by SAE J1970. (Measured from shoreline with boat in any level of operation.)


No person shall remove, alter or modify a muffler in a way that prevents compliance with this section. No person shall operate or allow to be operated a powercraft with an altered muffler or muffler cutout or in a manner that bypasses or reduces the effectiveness of any muffler system."

I think what you're missing is that the OP states he wants to install a Through Transom (TT) type exhaust with it ported out the sides and near the transom of the boat. That modification in itself is NOT illegal...what is illegal, and stated in Ohio's law above is that he cannot modify the factory exhaust so that it is so loud as to exceed the 90 db scale from two different locations. If the OP runs a marine exhaust (factory made i.e. Hardin logs), which includes either water injected headers or a water injected exhaust manifold (the water is used as the muffler) which are typically Logs and Snails, then he will meet Ohio's standards. When responding to the OP, please be clear as to what the law states and not what you want him to read and understand.

Secondly, the Ohio law that you've referenced is written towards those who have Over the Transom (OT) style headers or open TT headers with no water injection, baffles or mufflers installed in or on them. In that case, yes...I agree with you in that they are obnoxious however the TT open exhaust or the OT style exhaust is not what the OP desires.

Why not just leave the y pipe installed and cap it off at the top. Cause if you ever want to go back to it... you will be pulling the engine again. Just a thought...

Good luck with your project. I am partial to the noise my old Merc Tower of Power makes...but it still does not compare with a tuned thru hull exhaust note. That being said, I think my old outboard is far more obnoxious than a thru-hull exhaust. It seems that the debate is more about inconsiderate people than the type of exhaust. WOT near the shore or other vessels, docks or wake free zones is the problem, not the type or legality of the exhaust.

78 crusader.... Read it again... It makes no mention of through transom OR over transom.... It says do not modify in a way that makes it loud. To state that I have an agenda and am giving bad info is CRAP... I'm telling the truth and have proved it... You ALSO took my comment out of context..... I didn't originally post to change his mind... I posted in defense of those folks that you claimed were bashing him.... O/P asked a question and it has been answered and then some... You're just looking for a fight.

O/P.... Where do you call home? Have you considered adding mufflers? You might think about whether you have room in the engine compartment. If you don't and you later decide to add muffler tips then the size and location of your through hulls will be important...... I personally CAN appreciate the tone of through hull V8 exhaust as long as it isn't so stupid loud that your engine affects my conversation when I can't even see you anymore ... The mufflers go a LONG way to make the difference between obnoxious and cool..

I have been tempted in the past to put through hull on my wellcraft with twin 260's..... I DID leave the exhaust bellows off and that alone makes it a little more throaty... I have since decided to put them on though..... Noise can get old faster than you might think.... I think the poster above that suggested you leave the y pipe in place had a really good point.... You can cap the Y pipe on top with cheap rubber sewer caps from the hardware store and go back in a LOT less time if you choose.

People that have to make things louder, are usually the same kids who clothespin playing cards to their bicycle spokes. I think you should save the money on the exhaust, and put a set of "spinners" on and an extremely loud and obnoxious radio so that nobody else can hear theirs. I can then sell my radio and listen to yours.

What I have right now is through the prop but I wanna convert to make it come out of the sides. I know it's going to be louder but

Let me guess, you also ride a Harley with straight pipes? "Here look at me" syndrome ?


Why don't you put a riser out the top, and point the pipe toward your drivers seat.
Or better yet wouldn't it be louder if you ran the pipes forward along the gunnels and had them point inward next to the helm.

I've never seen so many cry babies in a thread before....

IMO, the sound of an outboard screaming by my condo window at daybreak is 100 times more annoying than the sound of a V8 with thru hulls. The fisherman have no respect where we boat.

couple of things here bud.....

no.....it wont hurt.

the second is that chances are that your leak you are looking for is not in the exhaust.

there is a thing called captains call that will allow you to switch between thru hull and stock exhaust at the flip of a button.....if i were you i would consider it. this is due to the fact that many places are making laws about noise on the water.

closing off the y pipe at the transom is unnecessary work. but it wont hurt any thing.

may i suggest......that you go to a local boat sales place......and ask to look at a boat with captains call thru hull......look at the setup.....and duplicate that.
if you duplicate what is already on the market....chances are there will be less chance of unnecessary hard labor during the installation
