I was wondering if anyone has come up with a homemade gear extender for any small HP outboard. Seems like it would be a lot easier to have a rod and a handle to shift R-N-F than reaching over your bench or seat to flip that little lever. Any website links or photos would be great!

Thanks

Rob

well i suggest that you get the little pin connections that are made for the shifter when forward controls are fited and put a wire to the front and ont the grab bar on the front of the motor weld a handle and conect the wires or simply weld a peice of tubeing to the side of the shifter and just pull it forward or push back. use your imagination

Re: Homemade gear shift extender

Rob, They sell extensions for the tiller model outboards(West Marine Item 224073, $39.99. Most were just to allow steering and speed control from the middle of the boat. There was at least one that remoted the gearshift as well. I do not have a line on it at the moment.

Chris1956,

Thanks for the info. I will research this a little more, there is a west marine down the road from me. The extension with the gearshift would be very nice and probably less hassle than trying to rig something together and getting hurt out on the water.

Rob, I memory serves me, the shift function of the extension was accomplished by pulling out (for forward) or pushing in (for reverse) on the end of the extension. It used a cable which ran to the shift lever on the side of the motor.

Re: Homemade gear shift extender

RobG, I had/have one of the tiller handle shift combo units on my 9.9, it came in an official OMC parts bag. It replaces the throttle grip, the new grip slides forward and back to change gears. It lasted about one season before it started to fall apart, then the cable broke. It's connected to the shift lever by a cable, but the cable bends too much and the inner part broke. It sort of worked but it was diffcult to push and pull it into gear. To sum it up, I am not going to buy another one of these units, I may just make something to extend the lever forward.

Depending on the size of the outboard, you could always pick up a remote kit, install it with the control box, but keep the tiller.

Steer with your Left Hand, Right hand on the throttles :)

Nav

Thanks everyone for the input. I have come up with a handle that works quite well. Walmart had some ATV shifter extension handles that bolt to your foot shifter clearanced for 5 bucks and I was able to use a bolt/locknut/spring combo and fasten it to the handle of the motor and guide it through a stainless eyebolt, works great!

It's been a minimum of a century since tillers were used for steering. Since Toyotas began in 1936, tillers were never used.

You need a new salesman Closed.
