I had a local shop machine me a alignment tool based on these dimensions:

http://mercstuff.com/images/modification.jpg

the tool fit perfectly in the engine coupler with no movement but it wobbles a little in the gimble bearing. The gimble bearing is new but i was wondering exactly how i am supposed to do the alignment if the tool wobbles in the gimble bearing. wont it be off a little. Also the tool has the main size and then two steps but for my housing i only need the small end and the main size are the steps fo other manufacters?

If the alignment tool is off, so will the alignment.

the only dimension you dont have is the main rod size which is the part that fits in my gimbal bearing. the dims i went from were eactly like you show and the shop made it exactly to the dims and the main rod is 1.375 and that size is accurate also so is the tool ok and it is just supposed to be a little loose in the bearing. when i say it wobbles in the bearing it is veary little. has anybody noticed this with a tool they bought.

also what is the second step for? It doesn't appear that i need is for my omc because the smalest diameter fits the coupler perfectly and the largest diameter fits the bearing so whats with the part in the middle? Is it just for another make?

Just out of curiosity, how much did the machine shop charge you to machine the tool? I know you can get em for about $70 shipped on eBay, did you get someone to spin one for less than that?

If you had it machined to those specs, all should be okay. Did the outer ring on the bearing look okay?
