I am wanting to purchase a 2 - 3 HP outboard to side mount to my canoe for lake fishing. I have read a little about Honda's 4 strokes and would like to get some opinions and recommendations on outboard choices.
Four stroke is a good choice, pretty much anybody's. Your canoe application means you have to be very weight conscieous. I would probaly go 2-stroke unless you go to waters that have 2-stroke restrictions.
Don't throw bad fruit at me.. but there is this guy on e-Bay that is selling Cruise and Carry 2.5hp outboards new for under $300. You could buy two of them..
Fouled Plug

I second "rogerwa" on his opinion that they are not much more than a weed wacker with a prop attached. I have never owned one-thank God. But have a freind that did. Here's what I thought of it. These engines were also marketed under the brand name "Tanaka".
1. LOUD!!!
2. Tempermental-particularly sensitive to hot weather.
3. Nothing serviceable. If it won't run-you're done.

If money is the big concern. Look for a second hand 2-3 horse. You'll find em on e-bay or in the local want ads. I have a 1967 Evinrude 3 (fold up type) that purrs like a kitten. Guess what I use it for? A canoe! If you stick with J&E or Merc./Mariner you'll find they're seviceable and you have SUPPORT.

Hope this helps.

Happy Holidays!
I have one of my own and im gowing to put it on my 9ft Boston Whaler. Anything more than a 3 will probably heavy depending on the size canoe I also know have heard air cooled happen to be easier and not always loud but i cant count on it
I happen to have a brand 2horse and is average quiet and it's in gas use. The gas is in the motor so i carry some around with me on the boat but it use it great one gallon will last about 2 to 3 hours i think its a pretty good motor just u may need two
Do you realize that you posted a reply to a 4 month old thread? 2 hp honda is great other than the noise from being air cooled. Support is there, parts are available (dealer) and very reliable.
