About a year ago a buddy of mine passed away, me and him were fishing buddies for years. back around 2010 or so he decided he wanted a four stroke motor on his boat and he was tired of mixing oil and gas in his 1969 Johnson 9.5hp two stroke.
He hunted around and found a deal on a barely used Honda 9.9hp, short shaft tiller motor. At that time he was 76 with some health issues. His normal procedure of storing his boat was to put the motor in the garage on a stand and to put the boat under a car port he bought for it. When he got the Honda he realized the extra 40lbs was too much to lift, so it stayed in the garage and he kept running the two stroke. I went with him once or twice and those times I swapped the motors out and we ran the new Honda. It ran fine, it was faster than the 9.5hp by a lot, the four blade prop may have had a lot to do with that. Each time we parked the boat the motor got the carb drained and it got put away in the garage.
That fall he had a bad stroke, and didn't fish much after that, his boat or motor just sat. The few times he got out it was in my boat, which was a longer version of his.
Our deal was that his boat and motor got used for freshwater, mine if we were running in saltwater.
Now, years later that Honda motor is still sitting on that stand where I put it back in 2010, it was fogged and had the lower unit oil changed that winter but other than that its not moved. His wife asked me to figure out what its worth and see if I can find a buyer for it. I think she needs the cash.
The big question is, what is a super clean 2006 model Honda 9.9hp recoil start short shaft tiller motor worth? The online value guide puts it at $300, but it puts all motors over 3 years old at $300.
A look at CL and FB turns up a bunch of 9.9hp four strokes for $400 to $1,800 from all years. A new motor just like it at the local dealer is $2,850 plus tax They have a 2010 there that looks very used for $1,750. But the dealer offered his wife $200 for it saying 'old motors aren't wroth anything'. That was coming from a dealer with a row of used motors all over $1,200 even the 40 year old two strokes.
The boat is sold but the buyer couldn't afford the boat and the motor, he only bought the boat and trailer. I may buy the 9.5hp, as I've got a matching motor in the garage myself.
What would you ask if it were your motor that you wanted to sell?
