'06 bf 225 with 400 hrs never any issues till now. We drove for about 2 hrs in calm ocean conditions with motor running fine - after fishing on the kicker for an hour we started the motor to move and it started fine but would only rev to 3800 dies back and then goes back to 3800 and dies back again. THe motor starts up and idles fine.
Here's what we tried so far testing after each attempt with no change:
- Drained the racor, on motor water seperator & VST- no water or junk found
- Replaced O2 sensor
- Replaced all filters (including high pressure)
- drained the gas tank & added fresh gas (I use Startron at each fill up)
- checked plugs & compression - looked fine
Took to dealer:
- checked for air in fuel low pressure side - they seemed to think the problem would be here
- they checked the VST - looked good
- they replaced the low pressure fuel pump
- charged me $900- still didn't work
- Back home I ran a fuel line from the tank bypassing the check valve, racor & prime bulb - put a clear tube on the fuel line in front of the engine filter and showed good flow with no air -
- Dealer came out and we tested with his computer hooked up and found no trouble codes or anything out of ordinary
- Dealer is confounded and is going to consult with Honda

Next I'm thinking of having the injectors cleaned and tested but I'll wait to here from Honda first.

Has anyone had a similar issues they solved?

That HDS scan will not tell you if you have a fuel pressure problem and it sounds like you may.You will need to monitor that fuel pressure at the point of failure when on the water.Have that dealer also check the end play on the crank. Not nessecarily a common failure but fits the symptoms. With a small pry bar under that upper pulley you should see no more than .018 play.

Re: Honda BF225 wont rev past 3800rpm

I took the boat out today and noticed that it seems to be having issues at lower rpms as time goes by. I did also try reeving the motor in neutral and it reeved up past 4k without a hitch. Just out of curiosity can you get it past 3800 with the idle control lever?

I will play a little more and observe tomorrow. I have never learned about boat motors but I guess it may be time.

DO NOT rev this engine or any other past 2 grand in neutral only. You are then freewheeling things and only bad things happen.

Re: Honda BF225 wont rev past 3800rpm

I tapped it for about 1/2 second and it went over 4k. Oopps i guess i shouldn't have done that.

I assume that the feeling i get when it jumps at about 4200 rpm is the V tech. It appears to still do that but at a lower rpm and not as noticeable. I would assume that it is a fuel issue.

Just had all the filters changed but think we may have got a bad batch of gas. Ordered new filters today local dealer didn't have low pressure filter in stock so it will be a week or so. Will post something if that works.

Well I finally got the boat out with a fuel pressure gauge hooked up. It had a solid 40#'s up till 3800 rpm then it dropped to between 20-25#'s and the engine started cutting out. I'm thinking the high pressure pump is bad? any other ideas?

I am having the same problem with a BF 115. If it were the HP fuel pump your motor would start and die. Sounds like the fuel pump relay could be bad. Let me know if you ever fix your engine problem.

That is good news to hear and not somethink major. Sorry to hear the dealer dinged you $900 and still didn't fix it for you. I don't think I would be going back to that dealer. Here in Bellingham we only have one dealer otherwise it is run to Anacortes to CapSante.

Re: Honda BF225 wont rev past 3800rpm

Thanks, tjseattle, for starting this thread. My Honda of same year and size is suffering the same symptoms as yours was... for the second year in a row. Dealer charged over $700 last year for computer analysis, complete fuel system cleaning (included built-in aluminum gas tank in center pontoon), cleaning of stuck injector, and river test run. Your thread may have just saved me from another high dollar repair bill.
I've already cleaned water sep. and fuel filter, but am unfamiliar with the high pressure pump/screen/filter.
Where can I find a diagram that shows where the high-pressure pump screen/filter are, and how to get to them? Thanks.
