Hey, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the older Honda 7.5 hp. I'm looking at buying an 80s model. It seems to run well. I did notice that it did not have much if any tell tale at the slowest speed. As you idle up it has a solid flow of water. In general are these good motors? Any ideas on the water pumping would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Honda BF75 1980s 7.5 hp.motor

Hi-
I have a BF75 that my father bought new in 1982 and it is a great engine that we use on a 10' Zodiac inflatable. I have serviced it over the years and bought a new gas tank, (remote), but the only problems I had were one, a spark plug went bad and was causing an intermittent miss under load. Two- the water system did clog itself and the engine was overheating- I pulled some things apart and cleaned passage ways with a wire brush, replaced the water impeller, - the erratic water output was obvious. The thermostat was decayed and since I couldn't get one right away I left it out altogether. Normally I wouldn't do that but we only use the engine for fun in the summer and since then it has been running perfectly. The water goes from slow trickle to steady stream, and from warm to hot depending upon engine speed. Three- the most major problem was it started popping in and out of forward gear under load. That I traced to some worn edges on the gear engagement dogs, or fingers, that mesh the drive shaft to the forward drive gear. I could have replaced the parts but fixed instead by using a Dremel tool to re-square the engagement dog edges.
These are problems any engine can develop but this Honda motor is smooth and quiet, doesn't smoke, starts right up and uses very little fuel. Thats why they are so expensive new.
