Re: honda outboards

Like evrything else Honda builds, their outboards are very good engines.

But in that size range they are carbureted. . . old technology.

If you want a 4 stroke in that power range, get one with EFI. I use a Suzuki DF70 EFI 4 stroke on my 17' Boston Whaler. It is hands down the best outboard I ever used, and I've been using outboards for over 50 years.

Check out the EFI Mercury 4 strokes as well as the Suzuki/Johnson line. The user friendliness is light years ahead of even the best carbed outboards.

Carbs: Cheaper, lighter, some think they are easier to work on.

EFI: Instant starts, every time. Smooth idle, computer controlled starts and warm-ups, more reliable, more economical, cleaner burning. Just like EFI cars vs. carbureted cars. Computer management makes a world of difference.

Re: honda outboards

Rocky,

This is my opinion and that only.

1. Older technology (carbs vs. EFI on some models)

2. Heavy.

3. Customer service lacking. My experience, trying to get a part for a new engine was awful-lost four months of service.
I won't go into details, but my family swore them off after that fiasco.

We have eight outboards, in the family, and we buy at least one almost every other year.

We may be repowering the "toon" this year. Taking off a Merc. 75 (nothing wrong with the service, just a dealer change) and are probably going to replace it with an Evinrude E-Tec, 90. The "toon" is stern weight sensative and a four stroke just won't work-at least in the 90 hp. range.

As I said, my opinion only.

Re: honda outboards

Rocky25: I have to admit, I'm with JB on this one. I just had a brand new Eastern Boat (New England Company) build & powered it with a Honda BF150. There's a lot of reasons why I bought the Honda in this class, which I won't go into.

If I were buying a 70 HP/90 HP 4-Stroke engine, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a Suzuki. Excellent engine @ a decent price! Suzuki's @ this range offer DFI vs. the Honda's are still carbs. IMHO, there's no way to steer away from the Suzuki! They did have a 6 year warranty program, but it ended after March 31st. Do the research for yourself & I'm sure you'll see the Suzuki is the better choice. Right now, Honda makes fine engines, but in this class Suzuki has them beat!!!! I wished the Suzuki DF140 had a bigger block but I decided on the Honda BF150 instead.

Take Care,

Alex

Re: honda outboards

What model Lund do you Have? I have a 1650 fisherman top rated for a 90hp mine is powered by a 70 Johnson. I often wished I went with the 90. Sounds like you maybe under powered with a 18 footer? Lots of dealers for a Bombuki 4 stroke.

Mercury makes a fine series of mid range four strokes...

Re: honda outboards

I have an 18 foot Lund Fisherman with a 115 Johnson 4 Stroke (Suzuki 115). It is a great match - trolls down to a couple miles of hour and still has plenty of get up and go. Starts and runs like a charm. After sitting for the winter started on the second try at the boat ramp, my 2-strokes in the past have never started that way. Always spent extensive time getting it going in my driveway before I went to the boat ramp. Firm believe in 4-strokes but would look at the Evinrude e-tecs also.

Hi,
I have a 1675 Lund (2002) 75 Mercury Carb and if i could do it again it would be a 90HP 4-stroke which is max HP for the boat. I suggest you getting a bigger engine if you want to enjoy your boat the most. Lunds are awesome boats. Really stable even is rough water. Just my opinion.

How come no one is mentioning Yamaha. Is this a bad motor. I have been hearing great comments on Yami's. Try looking into them but I am not sure if they make 4-stroke in that range of 70 to 90 HP. just a thought!
