Hi everybody!
I would like some smart suggestions how you would go about fastening/screwing onto honeycomb.besides opening the honeycomb sandwich and injecting a filler,or inserting wood for a good strong hold,Whats your idea?
I constructed my pilothouse out of honeycomb, and want to add a pair of handrails and a rocketlauncher and some other stuff,And have been trying to come up with other ideas than inserting something in the core to achieve enough strength and stiffnes to be able aply my toys....

If you have access to the backside and it would not look like crap, you could fabricate a backer plate and through bolt everything. I'm just Spek -u - la - natin cuz I ain't never worked with no honeycomb be4 ceptn to lick some honey of'n it.

Island,

Call NIDA Corp. they have great tech support. I would think they could be a big help, sure were when I did a NIDA poured core transom on my boat.

Hahahah
Thanx wood,Nice suggestion but yes it would look like $#@% !
backing plate wont work see,the nidacore has no meat inside of it (no compressive strength),its hollow exept for the beehive like compartments;hence honeycomb...
Thats why I posted this question,I know its a hard one!Whats normaly done is they open the core and pour or inject a filler in to give it its strength, without this the honey comb is just well,honeycomb...

I can't imagine you will be able to get a resin to flow far enough to give you strength. And just screws into it will not either. You mention handrails. You surely donct someone going overboard because a handrail came loos.

As well as you seemed to do with fiberglassing the pot house (assuning your picture is of the pulot house, surely you can fabricate something decorative over the backing plates.

Re: honeycomb/nidacore question

I got this from here: http://www.davesevs.com/honeycomb.htm

(You can do) bolted joints in honeycomb panels successfully using only items that can be found at your local hardware store. This was with both aluminum and composite panels. When doing this, use sealant liberally. Use a large quantity of small fasteners, rather than a small quantity of large fasteners. Finally, use fender washers liberally. Tighten the nuts slowly. You will hear the core or face sheets when they first start to deflect. When you start to hear something, stop. That fastener is tight enough. With the exception of not being able to preload the fastener, a bolt through a panel with a fender washer on both sides is stronger than a bolt into a potted-in insert.

Re: honeycomb/nidacore question

Thanxs everybody for taking an interest in my post and for all your replies!
difficult question huh?
Kickass, again There is no" meat" in nidacore,(no compressive strength available)Therefore no backingplate possible.Looking for a different solution,
yes, thats my pilothouse, thanx if you think I did well (I should, I used to be bodyworker at a boatyard) but that doesnot help in this case..
You can actually fill a whole sheet of nidacore with a filler if you wanted to and knew how to but I am just interested in all your ideas!
Thanx again and keep them replies coming!

Re: honeycomb/nidacore question

now THIS is interesting fishy,You came up with exactly the same thing my dad also suggested to me but I am concerned since my panels are only glassed with 2 sheets of biax on each side..you see in order for me to attach something on it like a rocketlaucher or handrails the skin(fiberglass) itself also has to be very resisting,(its not)But do they possibly leave the washers on the outside of the panel therefore eliminating this problem??????
Thanx!

Re: honeycomb/nidacore question

What I meant was: the sideward force aplied when one hangs onto lets say a handrail. Will this be eliminated when finishing the set up with the washers on both end on the OUTSIDE of the panel?
I personaly do not think so,Maybe with added filler for even more strength....

Do you have some excess material from your project? I would get some scrap and experiment with it. Then you can have some confidence one way or the other before hacking up your cabin.

I'll bet you'd be able to find some nut covers that would cover your fender washers/nut or bolt heads inside your cabin aesthetically, also - perhaps even fabricate something.

Re: honeycomb/nidacore question

In my boatbuilding days we removed the core where the fasteners bolt thru....and beefed up the area with biax.

This is true .. If you want a solid Mount of anything.

Compression mounts will work loose and create a problem in the future. Backing blocks are a must for most cases.

Im thinking you already know this by your thread/posts ..

Remove and back all through bolts without any core is optimal ..

Thanx,dr.
Anything I mount on my boat is allways done with locknuts,But I see understand what you mean.
What I dont understand is what you mean by:remove and back all through bolts without any core....
