Hood Gasket

Anyone replaced the gasket around the bottom of the hood on a late 70's 70HP?

The original was held on with things that look like big staples.
We have pried them off and removed the old gasket and have the new one on but wondered if it was best to try to duplicate the original means of holding it in place or if we should try glueing it on.

In the past, I have glued them on with success.

I use glue, but I have known some purists who have punched holes in the new gasket and used stainless wire to duplicate the original look.
