Hook gauges up to Johnson 60HP?

New owner of a very old pontoon boat, and it has a Johnson 60 on it... J60ELCEA to be exact. There are no gauges hooked up or even an ignition switch- just a mass of chopped wires under the console. Looks like most went to auxiliary lighting. I already contacted the local boat store for the ignition switch, and they have 1 in stock for $35.

At any rate, I'd like to trash the wiring and start over. I guess I'll need a speedo and pitot, and that would be separate. I don't even know what gauges or functions this motor will support other than a tach. Oil pressure? Engine temperature? Anything else??

The console is old and plastic, so I'm going to install a (nicer) cover plate and mount gauges into that. That leaves me pretty much wide open as to what I install, but I can't find anything online about the wiring at all.

Thanks in advance!! :)

You can hook up almost any gauge you want (except oil pressure)
-tach (very important) ...your remote has a connector in the back for this
-water pressure (pressure activated and you T off the pisser line)
-temp gauge (there's a place that a sensor screws into the head on your motor)
-trim guage (should have a lead from the motor)
-speedometer (actually not a motor gauge ...but good if you have place)
-voltage guage (simple...off the 12v)

The major wiring and harness changes take place in 1996 and up.

The standard harness with a large red plug will support most OMC recreational motors built before 1996 and after 1972. The pre-1996 gauges that are dependent on the standard main harness wiring are voltage and tachometer; the rest are optional and wired separately.

From 1996 and up, the engines are wired for Systemcheck and will require a new harness for a full range of service.
