Hook in chine, keel is straight.

I finally got the boat flipped so the I can work on the bottom. Sighting down the hull I see that the keel has a little hook to it. Probably less than 1/4". The chines have a good bit more. Maybe 3/8" to 1/2". Both chines appear to be identical. I made sure the hull was evenly supported before gluing/glassing in the new deck.

Is it possible this is by design? If it's not, what kind of problems am I going to find once it's back on the lake? With the 33 Evinrude on it I don't expect much more than 25mph out of it.

Some boats do have a hook designed into the hull and more often on the rear portion of the chine. With a pic it may be possible to tell if it's designed in, or if it's from a thin hull sitting on a poor fitting trailer.

Re: Hook in chine, keel is straight.

I'll get some better pics tomorrow. There's not enough light to show it right now.

I think I may have incorrectly described the problem though...

The boat is a tri-hull or cathedral of sorts. The chines are straight. The keel is slightly hooked. I'm not sure what the proper name for the parts on either side of the keel.

Here's a pic from before the deck was replaced just to give an idea of what the hull looks like.

Re: Hook in chine, keel is straight.

take a stringline to it.....only way to tell for sure.......

make the front of the string line is far enough back so it lays on the flatter part of the hull curve.......do that for all 5 points.....

the keel....(the center).....the chines....(the outside edges).....and the thingamajigs.....:D.....(the ones between the two)....normally called strakes....i dont know it strakes is the right word to use on your hull design....

remember where the plaining surface is on the boat....a hooked hull from the keel bulb, is not nessarly a hooked hull.....

Re: Hook in chine, keel is straight.

I will probably never know if it's supposed to be there or not. There's not a lot of these boats around to compare it to. I did put a string on it. The keel is less than 1/4". It's not really possible to put a string on the chines because they curve around. You know, it's sort of boat shaped lol.:D But the thingamajigs, I think they're just going to have to be what they are. If they're screwed, then they're symmetrically screwed up. I'm not a sculptor and I know I'm just going to end up with a mess if I try to build those areas up. A man's got to know his limitations.:D

So far, everything I've worried about has turned out to be worry for nothing. Maybe this will be too.
