I just got offered a deal I could not refuse. A 200hp yamaha 4-stroke (don't know year yet, just that it has very low hours) from a very good (very rich) friend for $2k.
I need to finance this purchase and have 2 1978 55hp johnson outboards on the boat right now. I just don't know what they are worth. They both run very well, and are clean motors. Can anyone help me with this? I need to put them up for sale soon, but have no idea what to ask. I was leaning towards $1k per motor. Any thoughts?

Are the 55's fresh or salt water used ? 1k per is kind of steep. You plan on putting a 200 in place of 2 55's ?

hate to tell you, but expect about 1/2 that. running well and being clean is a help.

They were fresh water used for the first 18 years of life, then in dry storage for 10 years, and I have had them for about 1.5 years and put probably 10 hours or so on them in salt water, flushed with salt killer every time.

So $500 per is fair?

i'm not even paying that for them. they are going for a little more on ebay lately, since new motors are so much. try to seller them as twins. you have the twin controlls correct. and they will do you no good with the yammy.

Is your boat rated for that much horsepower? If you have two 55s on there now, I'm kinda doubting that it is. If it's not, and it's rated for close to what you have on there, you'll be way, way overpowered.

I'm rated for 240hp.

Not a bad idea. I do have the controls, and they are close to brand new. $600 controls.

Last year we got a '79 55 horse for trading a 357 magnum (no extras, just the bare gun), and 200 bucks. So, call it about 400 bucks.
