I am interested in the FW Horizon 180. The local dealer only has the boat with the 3.0L Merc. Is that a sufficient engine for this size boat? Should I look for a 4.3L? Generally will be using the boat with 2 adults and 1-2 children. Weill be pulling skiers and tubers. Thanks, John

Re: Horizon 180 - Engine Size

I have a horizon 180 le f/s and I wouldn't consider that boat with less than the 4.3 engine. In fact I wish I had a little more hp. If I were to do it again, I would order the 4.3 with fuel injection or a 5.0 V8.

I also have a 180 Horizon, with the 3.0L Mercruiser. We are cottagers who mostly use the boat for watersports, and the engine/boat package has held up quite nicely for our needs. When I talked to the marina about the 4.3L option, she said it can be too much weight in the rear of the boat and if you want the 4.3, she recommended going to the 190. In terms of performance for skiing and tubing, you should have no problems with 1 - 2 or a few kids. We stuff 4 - 5 20 - 25 year olds in our boat and still have enough power for wakeboarding.

Re: Horizon 180 - Engine Size

I bought my Horizon a few months ago. I seached long and hard for my first boat and it was just my luck, this guy had bought it with the 5.0! This thing friggen screams. I have a friend that warned me of the 3.0. It really is a motor for the starter boat. If you want a good all around ski, fish or just cruzin boat, i'd opt for the bigger motor. No, it doesnt guzzle gas either, I filled it at the begining of the season and I'm still on that tank of gas. Good luck, and happy boating.

WE have a 180 it's a outboard version. It has a 150hp jhonson on it and with the right prop we have had it up to 68mph with one person and little weight and trimmed all the way up. It's a 2003.

Re: Horizon 180 - Engine Size

I just purchased a 2007 180 Horizon with the carbureted 4.3, 195 hp, and the boat screams. The speedometer goes to 55 MPH and I am able to bury it with 3 adults and a child. I tested it with a radar gun and even though the speedometer was buried my speed recorded was 51 MPH. 51 MPH in this boat seems really fast. This boat is really fast out of the hole :) it planes in a couple of second and is very maneuverable.
