Horn does not work on my SeaRay SunDeck 210 (2000)

I was commissioning my boat yesterday, fully charged batteries, press the horn button, it started to blow, gave me a weak, barely audible blow, then that was it. Does not blow any longer. Do I need a new horn? Where would I find the horn, anyway?

Thanks.

That is great, I checked the booklets that came with the boat last night, and they show the wiring running up to the stern side of the bow. I cannot see where it is installed. Do you think I need to remove the hard-mounted cushions to get to it? There also seems to be a vent on the outside of the hull, could it be under there?

Thanks!

Re: Horn does not work on my SeaRay SunDeck 210 (2000)

I have an 1987 Larson DC215 w/ mercruiser 180 I/O. It did the same thing with the horn. When I replaced it with a new one it still does the same thing. I also replaced the switch with no luck. On one side of the switch I get 12.5 v, when I push the switch I get 9.5 on the other side. Any suggestions?

I just helped a friend last weekend with his horn. No sound until I started touching the butt connectors. Corrosion was making a bad connection. I would rig up a spare battery or jumper cables to the horn directly to see if it works.

It only needs +12V and ground, simple as that. Sounds like Tansmit may have a bad ground or connection somewhere.

Try jumping out the switch with a wire or screwdriver to bypass the switch. Most boat electrical problems are due to corrosion and bad connections.

Poor connections, bad ground. I just had the same issue. Put on new connectors and shined up the toggle switch lug with emery cloth. Works like a champ now.

^^^yup^^^ Times 3, check for corroded wires/connectors. The actual horn assemblies don't go bad to often.

Re: Horn does not work on my SeaRay SunDeck 210 (2000)

Well, I bypassed everything and hooked the horn directly to a battery and it worked. The problem I'm having is when I do continuity tests everything is connected. I traced it back to the main ground on the engine block. I unhooked all wires going to it and my multi-meter still alarms, when I touch the main ground and all 4 posts/wires on the slave solenoid. I?m at a loss; I?m guessing somewhere I have a positive wire connected to a ground. What a mess?..

Have ya tried powering the horn from the toggle switch/or horn button or whatever ya have Then ya would know if the prob is for or aft of that spot. Congats on not having to buy a new horn btw. If ya have a pos connected to a ground thats a direct short and i would think ya would blow a fuse, melt a wire or at least drain your batt. has any of that happened ? Im havn a hard time picturing your set up tho ...

I installed an alternator conversion kit. After 15 minutes on the water the alternator made a popping sound and the ground wire on the alternator burnt up. Also, my batteries do drain very fast. Both went down to less than 70% in a couples hours. Luckily I have a higher end battery charger in the garage.

my bet is something awry with the wiring on the alternator conversion kit.

The conversion kit is no longer on the boat. I don't understand how the main ground on the engine block can have continuity with the slave solenoid, and all 4 wires as well.

Re: Horn does not work on my SeaRay SunDeck 210 (2000)

OK, I've done some testing and come to find out there's not connectivity with all 4 posts on the slave solenoid. Just the bottom right one, which is the purple resistor wire, and the bigger right terminal that goes to the starter solenoid. My engine block ground, with all wires removed, has continunity with the terminal on the starter solenoid, also has all wires removed. The terminal on the starter solenoid is the one which has the orange/red wire that goes to the slave solenoid, right terminal which i mentioned above. Is this something that's common or correct?
