I've got a '71 johnson 50 horse ele. shift.I recently replaced the $125 shift switch with a $4.00 marine grade headlight switch.Anyway every thing works great but the second or third time I went out in it the horn in the remote control suddenly went off after running out of gas and refueling. What does it mean?I cut the wire to the horn and it rus fine just curious. Thanks

Re: horn in remote control?

Don't you think the horn was a warning? Cutting the horn wire is like taking the battery out a smoke detector when it goes off and then going back to bed. Thats an overheat warning. One of two things happened. 1) your engine indeed overheated or 2) you inadvertently shorted the temp sensor wire to ground during the switch install. The fact the two are in the same area tells me #2 is the problem. As it sits now, you would have absolutely no warning of an engine overheat condition.
