Horrible screeching noise!!

I've got a 2000 Volvo Penta 3.0GSM-A on a Glastron SX175. When trying to start it the other day, I got a horrible, grinding, screeching noise. I had this happen one other time, thought it sounded like the starter/flywheel or combination.

So, I took the starter out & took it to a rebuild shop to get rebuilt (as the guys at the auto parts store tested it and told me it sounded weak). The guys at the rebuild shop put it on the bench and did an electrical test and a torque test and told me it seemed fine (only charged me five bucks too :).

I then took apart the cover for the flywheel and inspected that (seemed fine) and put it and the starter all back together.

After taking it out around 3-4 times with no problem, the horrible noise is back (I'm talking screeching, nasty, the kids are covering their ears horrible)

After cranking it a half dozen times, it finally started and ran fine. I'm stumped, what do you guys think?

Your sure it's the starter? Replace it. If screech remains, take it off and take it back. If it goes, sell it on Ebay. Use the box your new one came in to ship it.

Re: Horrible screeching noise!!--Update, now starts fine, what gives???

I just put the muffs on and started it. It started right up! Let it run for a while, then turned it off & on a bunch of times and everything is fine.

This is what happend up North, then it ran fine after taking the starter out and putting it back in. It runs good for a while, then I get the screeching start again (always at the most embarassing time!).

What do you think?

Re: Horrible screeching noise!!

I's say your starter is hanging up, a problem caused by wear nad or improper alignment. Some automotive starters have to be shimed to get them to align right. Next time it screaches, have your 3lb hammer ready to tap the starter with, see if that ends the noise. If it does, it's definately hanging up- a problem with the solenoid only, really. The starter motor may be just fine, for now.. If I would have gone to the trouble of taking it off, I would have just replaced it!

Starter bolts are tight, flywheel looks good, I would have replaced the starter when it was out, but the rebuild shop said it was fine (and it was in their best interest to say it wasn't fine). Isn't there some magnets or something in the starter that you can damage if you bang on it? Thanks for the replies, guys.

Just a thought fan belts can make a horrible loud screeching noise on cars when they are slipping, could a bearing be locking up on one of the pulleys good luck, terry

I was wondering somebody would mention fan belts. Older boat pulleys get rusty and wear belts fast. Check for loose belts. Make sure what they go around spins freely.

Re: Horrible screeching noise!!

robbyr1,

Did you ever figure this out? I have the same boat and motor - and the same problem. I have a 2001 SX175 - also with a GSM-A 3.0L Volvo.

I replaced my original Volvo starter with a Sierra equivalent last summer. Ever since then, I get around 15-20 starts with it with no problems. Then I get that same noise you described. I've been loosening the starter a bit, re-seating it, and tightening it back up. Then I get another 15-20 starts with it....

I just read on this forum that you aren't supposed to re-use the starter motor bolts, and am hoping that is my problem - that maybe the starter motor bolts are loosening just enough to cause the bendex to not engage the flywheel exactly right - although, the bolts seem basically tight even when I get this problem....they may be coming loose a hair though.

Anyway, I just got some new bolts and plan to put them in next time I get down to the lake to visit my boat.
