Horsepower or torque

QC,

I'm LAZY. I hate shifting. I liked the Macks of yesteryear with an Econdyne and a five speed. Real "smokers" when they lugged, which they loved to do.

A "twin stick"? Dear God, you are a glutton for punishment. ;) :p

DJ,

I was kinda kidding about the two stick, but I like to be able to match the speed to RPM perfectly for every situation. That's why I am currently in love with Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT), but nobody is making them that will take that kind of torque. Fun discussion. I'm telling you those Euro jobs are pretty cool. We should ask Nos4r2 about 'em . . .

QC,

I LOVE The CVT in my Ford Freestyle. It is ALWAYS at peak engine efficiency.

Re: Horsepower or torque

Man I want something with a CVT just to play with!!! I was thinking an Audi A4, but actually didn't know the Freestyle had one. Is it coupled to an additional trans of any type or is it the only trans? I believe some are using both. Seems stupid, but there are range limits of course . . . Can you watch the RPM swing around without feeling it shift?

QC,

The Freestyle has a CVT only. It is NOT coupled to anything.

The same trans. is used in the Ford 500 and the Mercury Montego.

It's really slick. No shifting, just a constant surge of power when you ask for it. It then immediately changes ratios to a nice cruise. As you know, the ratios are infinite.

Since I drive allot of hills, here in AZ, I like the fact that you don't feel a "kickdown". Just a smooth transition. The engine braking is also quite good.

Re: Horsepower or torque

old old saying, Horsepower gets the air time and Torque does all the work ...

now, we are talking towing, right kids? a three hundred horse cummins will tow 80,000 pounds with EASE for half a million miles.

why?

cause its got 600 pounds of torque!

take a 327/325hp out of a sixties corvette, cobble it up to bolt in where the diesel is, better yet a chevy 302 (yes virginia, chevy DID make a 302!) with 302 horses, and crank that baby up

after you have burnt most of the clutch facing off the disc, youll say, goodness, this mighty 302 horse motor is a dog! nope, its not, bolt it back into that Z 28 it came out of and it will blow your doors off

but it cant tow, no torque, and its peaky torque at that

what its all going to come down to, in view of the emerging macroeconomy, is what can get the job DONE and provide economical transportation day to day.

Dedicated tow vehicle, great, go big go strong you wont go wrong

Family car (well, truck) that does 12000 a year dragging kids and groceries around, and 400 miles dragging the mobile money pit around ... different story, have to weight out the good and the bad

My 5.3 crew cab Sierra WILL get 24 mpg ... at 47 mph, dont accellerate, dont use cruise, but do keep the AC on and the windows up.

Towing the tinny it got 22 at 55 on the Parkway, with occaisional clips to 65 - 70, loafing at 1700 rpm

On the other hand, its real mileage, in real world day to day city stuff is more like 14.7 ... and with 3 bucks a gallon coming like a freight train, that number isnt too great. Still, on a trip to the shore (or lake, or mountains, or whereever, a round trip of say 300 isnt going to be too much more expensive) I love the power and comfort of the thing, but if I didnt have a 3 ton boat to lug around id be looking pretty hard at the mid size trucks

just my 2.49 and nine tenths worth! (price of fuel today, 39 bucks to fill from just below half a tank (indicated)

:p

Re: Horsepower or torque

At roughly two and one half times the compression ratio on a diesel vs gas engine, that makes for a potent "bang" and the long stroke of a diesel makes for even additional torque. No doubt a diesel makes a better two vehicle. Unfortunately, those engines don't like to be started, run six blocks to the store, shut off, and the process repeated for the trip home. That said, I think the midsize truck market could use a small five or six cylinder diesel in the 220 cubic inch range. 275 300 lb/ft of torque would be sufficient for towing most recreational boats and economy would be much better than their gas brothers. I would have one in a heart-beat.

Upinsomoke are you trying to get Chevy to make such an engine as mine is 220 cubic inches and has 5 cylinders? :D

Re: Horsepower or torque

Nope -- not unless its a diesel. I've read a few Colorado trailering stories and the five cylinder gas just doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling. If it was available with the TrailBlazer six cylinder, that would be a different story. The Colorado is available with 4.10 gears but then the engine is reving like nuts, fuel economy goes down the tube and in the end, one might as well have a big truck that loafs if you can get nearly the same towing mileage. Yes -- I know I get a little over the edge with tow vehicles but I've never been disappointed with my selection. My trips are far too long and at too high a speed to be dealing with a screaming engine. However, since the manufacturers are being forced into new fuel economy ratings for trucks, a small engine and deep gears may be the only type of tow vehicle we have in the future.

Re: Horsepower or torque

To tell you the truth the F-150 pulling the boat to the lake at 75 got 12.3 mpg. The Ford Ranger got 11.7 mpg. The Ranger was left in O/D and did not seem to hunt as much as the F-150 did.

Trip is from 5500 Ft to 4500 and then back about 290 mile round trip.

Will let you know about the Colorado as soon as I get trailer brakes. I hate when you know all the facts but not the ones buried in the owners manual.

Basically the Fords don't have the 1000 lbs brake requirement.

Re: Horsepower or torque

Jeep has begun to offer a 2.8L four cylinder diesel in the Liberty. 295 lb/ft of torque which will make it a great recreational boat tow vehicle. It has a tow rating of 5000#. Unfortunately its on the pricey side.
