I am considering purchasing a new yamaha 212x boat, it has twin 160 hp. jet drive engines and i was wondering what that hp. is comparible to as far as like a 5.0 (260 hp.) or a 350 mag (300 hp.) inboard engines

Re: horsepower

It'll probably be as quick accelerating to 45 MPH as the same boat with a 320 HP stern drive, but have a lower top speed.

Re: horsepower

hp is hp.

but jet drives generally lose 30% vs their prop driven counterpart.

That number has improved a bit over the years and is not fixed. The efficiency difference varies with speed (it goes up the faster you go).

Re: horsepower

This brings up an interesting question. I know that HP on outboards are measured at the prop now, are I/O the same. Is there any way to measure a jet drive at the jet or is the HP rating off the crank. I wouldn't think that it would be a 1:1 conversion. On the other hand I have read nothing but good about those twin Yamaha jets.

Re: horsepower

Yes I/O's are rated at the prop, have been since the 90's.

Just guessing here, but jets are probably rated at the impeller shaft, although the loss from the crank reading would be very small.

Picked up a new '16 212x and compared to my old Bayliner and ski natique it has plenty of hp's to go around. Can get up on plane even with 9 people on board very quickly plus pull a three person tube with no problem. I love the jet engines it just took me quite a while to get used to steering and docking

Jets can be fun but use more fuel because they are less efficient.
