Hose fell of muffs - overheat alarm

Got home from a good day out yesterday, had the muffs on and outboard flushing while I was sorting some gear near the boat. I didn't notice the hose had fallen off (the hose has a 'stopper' fitting on it so if it's on and not attached to anything it doesn't waste water) and heard the alarm. Shut the motor down as quickly as I could get round to that side of the boat (5 seconds tops).

I have a few queries about this alarm
- Does it sound BEFORE the motor overheats? Ie. does it sound when the operating temperature goes above normal, but before it's at dangerous levels?
- Is shutting it off and letting it cool the correct way to proceed? I didn't realise the hose had disconnected until after I'd shut it down and went to investigate. Should I have hooked the hose back up straight away and restarted it to get the temperature down?

After it did cool down I reconnected and ran it and the flush finished (under close supervision) without issues, seemed to be running fine. At idle, anyway.

Check compression on all cyls.

You're probably okay....the alarm sounds before a catastrophic overheat.

I never let my motor run on muffs unattended for just that reason (muffs falling off etc).

Thanks mate. I'll check compression ASAP.

Leaving it unattended depends how you define the word I guess. I was right there, beside the boat, but not standing there looking at the muffs/hose (I did watch it till it started coming out of the nostrils) then went and sorted the tackle box etc right next to the boat. Personally, I wouldn't class that as unattended. Maybe I should though - maybe I'd be better off to stand there and have a beer while it flushes and then sort out everything else.

At any rate - I've thrown out the cheap fitting that was on the hose (I should have clued up, the water pressure was spitting off the trigger nozzle!) and replaced it with a far better one so hopefully it won't happen again.

Check the raw water impeller. Running without water flow can ruin it pretty quickly.

Unattended ?? It's best to be there.I was working on a boat, had fitted the hose and muffs was gettin ready to turn the water on and do a tune up. I got out of the boat and found the yard boy wrapping up my hose and walking away with it.Another time the same yard boy turned the water off while I was working on a running motor, luckily I was standing there and could shut it down quick. He said the boss needed his truck washed and the boats would have to wait??
Do a comp test, just to make sure.
Not sure how long it was running but change the impeller(just in case).
If you really want to be sure?? Tape it in place. But don't leave it anyway.
When were done fishing,"I" and "I" alone hook up the muffs and have someone start the motor and "I" stand there and watch it.
It's so easy for the muffs to slip off, just a little mis-step on the hose and it can fall off.
