Was going to check for spark (3000 rpm max under load, good compression) on 1985 60 hp merc and after cranking about noticed battery terminal and wires at battery very hot, burnt myself.connection at starter relay not hot.any ideas? thanks
Heat is generated when an electrical current flows through resistance. The starter draws a large amount of current, so even a small amount of resistance can generate a substantial amount of heat. Resistance can be introduced by dirt between the terminal surfaces or a loose connection or both. As akwalker says, you have a corroded (dirty) or loose connection.
I will try cleaning and tieghting connections. I noticed on a old thread that some said to do away the wingnuts and get stainless bolts. What do you think? thanks
