I just replaced the lower unit with another one because mine broke a gear.
Trying to start on the rabbit ears. Turns over real slow like battery dead. Got new battery.
Connectors were corroded so I cut them off and cut back the wire a bit and replaced with tinned copper connectors, punched like the parts guy said (negative and positive)
Still turns over slowly, like a weak battery. Battery cables get very hot.
I checked the connections on the engine side and they are tight with no signs of corrosion. (not hot on motor side, just near battery)

When I put on the new connectors, the copper wasnt really shiney. It was kind of dull, almost black. Could the whole cable be bad?

Or, could the starter be bad? I thought starters when they failed just quit, not turn over slowly. I know the load on the slow cranking can cause the wires to heat up. I am trying to figure out if it is the wire or the starter?

Can a starter run weak?
Thanks,

Most starter issues stem from a bad connection somewhere. Can you by-pass your ignition system altogether and hook a pair of jumper cables from the battery to the starter? That would tell you if the starter is working or not.

It could be a few things but first thing first if the cables are getting hot that means that the wires are bad and causing alot of resistance ,they could have corroded internally (has happened to me before you couldnt tell from the outside but when i stripped the coating they were pretty grean and really broken inside.) before spending money on a starter or anything else i would start by replacing the cables they are cheap and its always good to check and make sure they are good perioduically since the can cause some serious issues if ran with bad cables.

agree with the starter test by jumping straight to it. and yes the cables can go bad and may need to be replaced if both ends are tight and clearn

Agree on battery cables except that good ones are not cheap.
