Merecruiser Chevy 350 (5.7) 1977

After running for awhile if I shut down the engine will not restart. absolutely no response from the start selonoid. not even a click. it is almost as if the battery(s) were totally dead. This is not the case. If I let the engine cool for about 2 hours or so, she starts just fine. Soneone told me that the seloniod is getting hot and need to cool down, I have never heard of this. But why now?

Re: hot engine will not restart

Take a test light with you the next time and see what is going bad.
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=012808

You can just use a jumper wire to start it if it's only a slave solenoid causing the problem. A starter solenoid would be a different problem. Could also be a corrosion problem on a terminal. Take them all apart, inspect, clean, and reinstall to be sure.

Re: hot engine will not restart

I have replaced the starter and no change. When hot I get 3.5VDC at the starter ( ign switch) I have 12.5VDC at the switch. Once cooled down no problem, starts right up. I replaced the wire from the harness to the started no change. The harness is too far from the engine to get hot.

Have you cleaned the cannon plug on the engine. They will loose connection like that when hot.

Re: hot engine will not restart

The engine harness is attached to the engine, the slave solenoid is attached to the engine, the starter solenoid and the cables and wires attached to it are attached to the engine. The main harness plug (round 10 pin plug) is in very close proximity to the engine. And how hot does it take, may only be a few degrees before whatever it is goes bad.
When hot I get 3.5VDC at the starter ( ign switch)
Where EXACTLY are you checking that at????

Re: hot engine will not restart

Iget the low voltage off of the yellow lead that comes off of the wiring harness canon plug. I have unplugged the canon plug then reconnected it. no change. the engine does not overheat (140-150F)

Try this. With a good ground for your meter, check the terminal on the ignition switch with the Yellow/red strip wire and see what the voltage is when you turn the key to start.
Then check at the B teriminal in the picture below and see what the voltage is, when you turn the key to start.
Let me know the results of both tests.

Re: hot engine will not restart

I have been trying to trace voltage. I started at the battery all the way to the switch then to the ign wire. good voltage until I get to the yellow wire on the engine side of the cannon plug. 3.5 or so. Also, I get a heave load on the amp meter almost full Discharge. I have not yet pulled the canon plug apart. It applears to be in good condition and everything else going thur it functions just fine.
