just wondering if anyone can tell me which one they think is better... the foot control throttle or the good ol' hand throttle, or if there is even a plane the two can be compared on, i just saw em on sale at the cabelas, and im wondering if i should blow the money on it or just stick to the hand control...

thanks

Re: hot foot or hand throttle?

The only reason I would want a hot foot is if I needed both hands on the wheel at all times. Examples are a really fast boat (and I would still want the ability to cruise with a set hand throttle). Or if I needed both hands for something else like fishing, and that's why there are foot controls for a trolling motor.

I have driven fast jet boats with a foot throttle. It gets VERY tiresome when cruising.

I am sure I am probably missing sumpin' else, but that's my .02 . . .

every movement of the foot changes the speed, constant attention to the rpms. if using for water sports, the hand throttle act like cruise control, except in shape turns. i agree very tiresome. hand control properly maintained is just as fast as the hot foot. it's another gimmick to get your money.

Re: hot foot or hand throttle?

The hot foot is necessary on performance boats such as bass boats or any boats that are going in the 60, 70, 80 or above mph. Usually these are pad bottom boats, and when up on the pad they are susceptible to chine walk, which can be dangerous. You drive these boats by the seat of your pants, and you really need to have both hands on the wheel and the ability to adjust the throttle. For the average boater who is cruising around at 40 mph a hot foot is needless.

Foot control is a pain in the ass !! Thats why most cars have cruise control.

wouldnt the foot pedel bounce with the hitting of the wakes? a hand throttle would be much more stable and consistant

All of the above.

Also, one reason I think as to why OB's last so long is that most are operated with hand throttles and the engine is not subjected to continuous jerking around (accel-decel) like you would get with a foot control.

And then there is the revving up like you do in a car; you just don't do it with a throttle.

Have thought about one on occasion but dismissed the idea each time.

Well, you are different Dee. Like you said, your engines last one race or so........you did say that didn't you?

And I can imagine what your engine is subjected to in trying to win the race. d:)

So, did you bring home any titles?

Re: hot foot or hand throttle?

hehehehe, yeah I did say that, although my motor didn't run much in the last race, running that motor at WOT for 5 days really kills it hahahaha, the weather was so bad, but my times was really good, I won a couple of sets in my devision, but lost my favourate cleaver prop ..... the weather messed up the whole race, we spend more time on the road towing the boat to the next point than time on the water .... hopefully next time the weather is better .....

No, the pics I have, the weather was perfect :), it was really storming and raining this year, 18 foot waves and wind speeds of up to 50 mph ..... coming from me this must sound odd, but that was really looking for getting yourself hurt out there .... hehehehehe
