That's a Starliner with a HiPerformance 390 and manual trans. Is that what your folks had?
Whoops - I thought that was a Galaxie. That's what we had. Late 60s model, but it was in the early 70s we had it. I was too young to know what was in it, but there are a few lingering pictures somewhere.

After that was a '68 Delta 88 with a 455. Mom could smoke those tires just going for groceries.

I love listening to them fly bye at WOT. I say "that's the sound of money!!"

A buddy brought out his J Craft he had dropped some insane engine in years ago. We sunk it when the transom basically broke off trying to bury the needle. I remember being young and bullet proof now and again.

The transom broke off!??? I have no idea what a J craft is but I'm guessing possibly an outboard powered boat that had too much motor?

Funny you mention age. Most of the guys I see with these boats are along in the years. At 49 I'm one of the kids. haha

Yep, speed skiffs are a blast. (Actually sort of a love it or hate it kind of boat.) I grew up right where they were developed on the Jersey shore back in the 1920's. I also have an antique wood one that I've had for almost 40 yrs now. It's not many 16 ft boats that will do 70+ mph, is great for waterskiing, and can also take you bass fishing out in the ocean.

They certainly look like a wild ride. Kind of like cracker box boats. :) I bet you've seen a lot growing up there.

I grew up hearing them from our house or seeing them out on the water just about every weekend, and then having my own since I was 17.
Around there if you are into hard core local boating you have a speed skiff instead of a vintage Harley. If you ever see one you should go have a talk with the owner, most guys are very happy to talk about them, (and give a quick ride). It is a boat ride you will not forget!
Every Sept. there is rendezvous at one of the local boat clubs where they were developed. Usually a couple of dozen or so skiffs show up and the community is invited. A great day of just speed skiffs.

That's awesome!

Last summer I saw 2 at one of our get to-gethers, but I saw them both from high above on the zip line. I shot that photo from the zip line, but I couldn't get down there fast enough before those guys left.

The other 2 times I've seen Skiffs were when they raced at Irvine lake in the 1980's and again at Long Beach stadium at a sanctioned race. They've installed roll bars on the race boats since then.

The APBA has required the 'roll bars' or cages since some time in the '90's. Not because the skiffs ever roll over (long time racers can remember only a couple of times one has actually rolled over since the 60's). The cages are to keep other boats from running over the top of you if they wing out (they can bounce around that much). The "outlaw" guys in South Jersey still race without them,... But they will also run any engine ( APBA allows only the 283's and 305's)

On Grass Lake of the Fox Chain O" Lakes there is a place in the middle of the lake called Blarney Island. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q...elarney+Island&qpvt=Belarney+Island&FORM=IGRE They hold boat races every Thursday night. Though I haven't been down there in years.

I moonlighted as a bouncer there from 2005 to 2012. Races are every Thursday. Still go out and watch a couple times per year. Actually, it's one the Admiral's favorite stops.

I'll get some pics this summer and post them in here.

I've seen a lot of fast boats in my day, but watching this thing on the water was awesome - seriously! It is, bar none, the fastest 'daily driver' I've ever saw on water. Boat's going 80-90mph look WAY different than boats doing 60-70. This thing was hitting 85+ without breaking a sweat. When the guy tried to make it sweat (he was wearing a helmet btw), the wind & chop that day got a bit spooky. I spoke to him after he docked it, and grabbed some pics while his family tended to it while he got the trailer. The thing was built in '69, and is pushed around by a 620-something inch Donovan. I was amazed at the condition of the thing, totally pristine and nothing half-*****ed about it, anywhere. I'd have given a left....toe to drive it for 5 minutes! :)

Sweet boat! Looks like a Sanger if I had to guess. This style of boat only weigh 2000-2500 lbs which is in the vicinity of a VW bug. Add 600 to 2000 hp and you have a dangerous but very fun ride. :)

They can also be lower hp and great ski boats with full interior.

Great Pics thanks!
