hey everyone. i got an 89 mariner 175, i just did the water pump rebuild and a new shift shaft seal. i tested it on a hose and in the water and it is pissing water pretty good but when it is a little weak at idle. i was on the water and i went back to feel the water and i could braely keep my hand under it because it was hot. now im not talking searing the skin hot but hot enough to bring to my attention. my question, is there some kind of thermostat that can be replaced or any other kind of solution? or is it supposed to be that hot? thanks for any replys

Re: HOT WATER?

It should be 140 F. You can replace the t-stats, but it doesn't sound to me that they are bad. I just replaced mine this spring, and my water comes out like yours, very warm to the touch.

Re: HOT WATER?

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most difficult, I'd rate this a 2. Just make sure you buy new gaskets with the stats. Makes the job easier than to try and salvage the old ones.

Re: HOT WATER?

There are two, one on the top of each cylinder head, like joe mentioned.

Just follow the tubing from the teltale and that will lead you to the stats. Two bolts for each stat.

Re: HOT WATER?

Your water temps sound normal... The water will be even hotter than 140F... After the stats open the water flow really increases... After a run or even extended running at no-wake speeds the water will get even hotter than the 145F needed to open the t-stats....

Re: HOT WATER?

RE: measuring water temp coming out of the tell tale .... Something I tried the other day, which seemed to work:

Got a small skinny jar and a meat thermometer (with a long probe). I use a msall olive jar, it is about the same length as the probe, and narrow enough at the mouth so the thermometer doesn't fall in. I put the thermometer probe in the jar and then fill it up from the tell tale. It showed about 140 (I believe the accuracy is pretty good). The water felt pretty hot.

Re: HOT WATER?

On v6 Merc/Mariner from that vintage water will get hotter than 140F after an extended run as I mentioned...

These motors with temp guages and the overheat switch measure metal temperatures from the heads and will set off the alarm at 240F....

Water temps will be much lower but when the t-stats are fully opened the water will be hotter than the 145F needed to open them at the conditions I mentioned.
