I have a 1964 40hp. Evinrude selectric shift that I am working on off the boat( Carb and lower unit seals). I would like to start it off the boat in a water tank. Can I jump start it at the starter? Do I need any other connections at the harness?

You don't need any connections at the harness, just jump to the starter. You'll have to choke the engine to stop it, or rig up some way to connect the two small black wires in the harness together. Careful though - those wires will bite when the engine's running.

Good question, Between the green and blue wire that leads to the shifting solenoid, I have read two contredicting versions of wich wire controls forward and reverse. Do you know if 12V to green will put it in forward. 12V to blue reverse and no voltage is neutral?

That is correct phil. not voltage should be neutral. The hydro-elect shift is different. You can jump the starter or just pull the rope. you better figure a way to shut this sucker of though. Rig a kill switch, choke it out, stuff a shop rag in the carb.

Re: Hot wiring my outboard

Sorry to bring up an old topic, but I have the same situation with my '69 40hp selectric on a stand in my garage. The control box is literally 10 miles away attached to the boat, and I have no desire to remove it from the boat.

I think I understand how to jump the starter solenoid, but I'm not totally clear on the most effective way to shut the motor down.

Can I wire up a toggle switch somewhere to act as a 'kill switch' ??

Assuming I need to jump two wires in the harness connector.....which two wires would that be? I only have the half-connector that is on the motor at the moment.

Thanks for any advice you may have.

Yeah, you can wire up a toggle kill switch. Rig it so it shorts the two small black wires together to stop the engine. When they're apart, the engine will run.

But it might just be easier to choke it to stop it, or back off the idle stop screw so you can just idle down it till it stalls. That's how they used to do it before kill switches anyway...

Good luck!

FYI, early selectric shifts no voltage was neutral. later units no voltage was forward. I suspect the reason is so you could still get home if the battery was dead on the later units.
