I want to install an hour meter on my motor. Is there any thing special about installing one? Where do you make the connection so that it runs whwn the motor is running?
Thanks
jimpittman

I mounted mine back in the engine compartment. I check it when I check the oil.

I connected the negative (-) side of the hourmeter to ground on the engine block. Positive (+) side of the hourmeter to the positive (+) side of the engine coil.

The above is as good as anything - any point in the electrical system which is live when the ignition key is "on". Usually the engine is running in this state.

However, if you want to be fanatic and actually have it measure the hours the engine is really running, that can be tricky and could involve anything from putting in an oil or water pressure gauge and using it to trigger a relay. Or you might find some point in the charging system that has voltage only when the engine is running (would have to be before the rectifier/regulator since you'll see the battery voltage beyond that point.
