Hour Meter?

I recently purchased an 06 8hp high thrust motor and would like to install an hour meter. Has anyone come up with a good way to wire one in. All I can think of is an on/off switch, which I just know I will forget to turn on or off at some point. Thanks.

Re: Hour Meter?

An hour meter connected through a switch is fairly useless. At the very least no one will believe the hours when you sell the engine.

It needs to be hooked to the ignition circuit.

Re: Hour Meter?

Wiring through the ignition only works if you have an electric start outboard (has a battery). The ignition cannot power the hour meter which is nothing more than a 12 volt clock movement that shows accumulated hours rather than 12/24 hour periods. Those meters run whenever power is applied. If this is NOT an electric start engine then you need a Tiny Tach (brand name) that has a built-in hour meter. They have a tachometer and hour meter and are powered by a 5 year internal battery and triggered by a lead that wraps around one of the spark plug wires.
