Is 600 hours a lot on a 5.7l? The boat has been maintained well, the current owner says it's not burning any oil. This is a 1990 Wellcraft. I'm just curious when these 5.7L start to wear a little! Anybody rebuild these 5.7? If so, about (on avearge) how many hours did they have?

Thanks! :)

Re: hours on motor?

It depends on how it was run. The 350ci (5.7) chevy is the most popular motor in the world,so parts are cheep. Northern auto (http//www.naparts.com/)has a rebuil kit with pistons, cam, timing chain, everything for $149.95. You cant beat that!!! As for the hours...If the motor was taken care of my guess would be around 60000+ miles. The last 350 I had in a van got 280000 out of it with 1 rebuild. You can do the math. M

Are rebuild parts for a marine 5.7 the same as a standard aout motor?

Any problems to look for on a motor with 500 hours? How about the Alpha 1 outdrive?

Lastly, anybody familiar with the 1990 Wellcraft Eclipse (23 footer)? This is a part open bow part cuddy.

My friend has that boat with a 454 in it. It's been a good boat. His only problem has been that the engine hatch rotted and had to be replaced. The boat handles and runs good.

Everything is the same except for the carb and sometimes the heads (thats not often). It is always a good idea to use good name brand parts, but like I said befor even good parts for a 350 are cheap.
The problem to look out for are burning oil. I have never seen a chevy that didnt it just depends to what degree. Alpha 1 outdrive, change the fluid and make sure it is topped off after you run it once(short trip). There is one thing to check, the rubber boots (3) that go from your outdrive to the transom. They always seem to end up with a hole in one of them(fish hook, age, ect).Dont forget to grease all your fittings inside the motor cover and outside on your outdrive. M

Re: hours on motor?

For a comparison, 600 running hours on your car at an average of 50 mph would be about 30,000 miles. But the boat has no air cleaner, and normally gets pushed harder than a car.

Bottom line, 600 running hours would not scare me away from it, if you could be convinced that it had been maintained (proper oil changes, fairly clean engine, no "oil burn" smell when running, good engine compression, etc.)

Hi Jim Wilson

To me 500 Hrs sounds really good. Here in town there is a waterskiing club. They ran 2500 Hrs on their. Skiboats are run rough, towing hard all the time. It was sold - still OK in motor. Ive heard about 3500 Hrs too, still running fine. If yours seems OK dont worry.
